This is America so I'm probably misunderstanding this, but didn't we pass a pretty decent increase to unemployment benefits? FOR THOSE ELIGIBLE, it's an extra $600 a week, plus whatever additional state benefits. My work is currently considered essential, but my boss was telling me that if we have to shut down our warehouse employees will end up making more than their normal wages. The benefits are supposed to last up to four months. I guess if they just don't approve any of the unemployment claims then everyone is hosed but I have to imagine the unemployment offices are swamped with work right now and are just rubber stamping everything.

I'm sure there are many sites to buy seeds but the first company that springs to mind is Burpee https://www.burpee.com I remember looking at their catalogs growing up since my parents do a lot of gardening. I don't know exactly what you'll want but unsurprisingly beans would probably be good for subsistence, they grow really fast. I'm thinking of green beans specifically but there are probably a bunch of types that grow quick.

the dreams of the delighting void

I read a great book a while back called something like "local notables and the City Council" that was written in the late 60s and describes the way in which local governments in capitalist societies are entirely captured by the local business interests and completely gum up any attempt at democratically allocating resources

it's not a shocking or revelatory premise for us because we live it so openly but back then there were competing interests like labor unions which offered some competition to the country club set at the ballot box

anyway, these crooked southern politicians are all born of that system and they are at best idiot suit dummies who are just pleased as punch to live in the same gated community as all these powerful men and at worst craven snakes who understand the game and are hungry to take their money hungry bloodlust to the federal level

Isn’t unemployment kinda a goal of shutting everything down? Like it’s just a measure of stay at home order effectiveness minus essential employees minus wfh.

Seems like our gov is afraid to admit that so we also don’t have to admit that we need a huge increase in benefits and no rent etc

not necessarily. a business doesn't have to sever its employee/employer relationship just because of the shutdown - even in cases where the employer does not or cannot make payroll, you can still do something like "we're sorry we can't pay you right now, but we're not firing you and you can come back if we get to the other side of this", just so that the employee knows that there IS something to go back to afterwards

for example, here in the Philippines some offices are implementing a no-work-no-pay scheme: my brother is only making a fifth of his paycheck because he's only clocking in once a week, but if he ever gets the chance to start working again normally, he doesn't have to job-hunt

or my own company is not levying any kind of penalty for anyone who's absent through the period of the lockdown, and even people who haven't come to work in the last two weeks are still getting paid half their regular salary

No universal health insurance and the complete collapse of state and local budgets (and thus employment and services) is still real real bad

This will last longer than four months as well but Republicans will be talking about bootstraps and personal accountability soon (not for corps though)

its incredibly hard to watch all this stuff unfold because we only have "normal" times to contextualize what is happening

there are ways around a problem like this, but we will have to take unprecedented actions... things like socializing utilities, hospitals, banks and possibly even rolling services like ups/fed-ex into the post office

the only way we get through is by accepting that nobody is going to get out of this richer and cutting deals to keep everyone more or less whole through the disaster - this will likely mean a lot of debts disappearing since the alternative would be far more damaging and long-lasting

its literally socialism or bust
