Wouldn't we be naturally better prepared by fall than we are now because we will have actually invested money in non diminished supplies by that time that we are only just investing in by now or is that offset by the fact that we will most likely have less doctors and nurses at that time since they will succumb to the virus?

quote:

(CNN)The streets of Ecuador's western city of Guayaquil are deserted, with few residents in sight -- and a few dead, as bodies are being left in the streets of this overwhelmed place.

The coronavirus pandemic is overloading this city's public services to a point of collapse. Hospitals have no beds left to accept sick patients, and morgues, cemeteries and funeral homes are straining. With no place left to put them, some residents say they have no choice but placing them outside.

It's unclear how many of the deceased are dying because of Covid-19. Many families say their loved ones had symptoms of the virus, while others only know the ill were unable to be treated at Guayaquil's overwhelmed hospitals.

"We have been waiting for five days," Fernando Espana said in a video obtained by Reuters on March 30, as he complained about the struggles to have authorities come pick up his family member.

"We are tired of calling 911 and the only thing they tell us is to wait, they are working to solve this," he continues as he moves the camera through a window to show a black plastic-wrapped shape inside the home, with two fans blowing on it.

The smell is too much to take. "It's the odor from the body that one can no longer handle," Espana's neighbor, Glenda Larrea Vera says in the same video, from across the street and behind a mask. "And we also have neighbors that are elderly. I have my mother who is 80 who is also having respiratory problems."

Video surveillance from last week obtained by CNN shows a motorcyclist abandon a body in the street. Hours later, a group of people, dressed in special hazmat suits are seen picking up the deceased, then driving off in a vehicle.

In another video obtained by CNN, a group of people remove a body from a car. Covered in face masks, they wrap the body in a what appears to be a black tarp when a police vehicle approaches minutes later. A conversation takes place and the group puts the body back into the car. Police tell CNN they could not offer details about the video.

National figures show that Ecuador's authorities have collected more than 300 bodies from private homes in the city between March 23-30.

Jorge Wated, head of a joint military task force created to deal with Ecuador's coronavirus crisis, in a televised interview on Wednesday said that his task force had gone from "taking away 30 deceased per day to 150" over the past three days. Wated added that this was "independent of the hard work reactivated by the private funeral homes and graveyards in the country."

Guayaquil's mayor Cynthia Viteri has desperately begged for help from the national government in a video posted to her Twitter account last week. "What is happening in the country's public health system? They are not taking away the dead from houses, they're leaving them on the sidewalks, they're falling in front of hospitals. No one wants to pick them up," she said, adding later, "we need to know the causes of why people are dying in their homes."

seems like a maturity thing. I’ve had outbursts in the past at them but have exercised some restraint now. but it’s really really hard.

how do other goons handle it?

Well it's not easy and only you can assess what you're capable of and what's best for your family. If you're able and if everyone's acting in good faith, try to approach them from a place of empathy. People are by and large not actually politically engaged, when they're not completely apathetic they're a mostly incoherent jumble of half-heard policies and ideologies which is why universal healthcare as an issue polls at 70+% but we keep electing people who actively crush it. This is by design to keep people like your family disengaged and to sabotage class consciousness. Idk the socioeconomic situation of your family but I'm guessing Trump & the GOP have been the only ones talking to them for 30+ years since the Clinton machine abandoned the working class/union base in favor of neoliberal technocratic bullshit, so they literally haven't heard a different point if view addressing the problems they see every day in a meaningful way.

If you can start from a point of empathy and understanding it will increase your own tolerance, and if they're willing to engage earnestly, you can start to tease our what's important to them and show them the (leading) light by putting it in proper class context.

This assumes a lot of good faith on everyone's parts though so if they're just gonna concern troll you or disengage the second their premises are challenged you probably won't be able to get very far. It's very important to not seem condescending or otherwise superior to them because feeling talked down to will make them defensive real quick.

Again it's up to you to determine what you're comfortable with/capable of but keep in mind that "it's not my job to educate you" is loser white liberal bullshit we all need to be organizers and educators.

Its going to peak in two weeks in the current epicenters yeah. Also I would like to remind the thread again that predicting a peak coming soon isn't being optimistic its being pessimistic. The sooner peak is the steeper the curve is. The steeper the curve is the more people are sick simultaneously. The more people who are sick simultaneously the more deaths there are the worse hospitals are overwhelmed. In the 1918 flu epidemic St Louis put quarantine measures in place almost immediately while Philly waited and held a parade. The epidemic lasted much longer in St Louis but there were way less deaths than in Philly. Its a tradeoff between length and intensity and we seem to be going whole hog on intensity.
