I've been bored so now I'm going to make you bored by posting this long-rear end battle report from a game I played via text message today:

Link to background info about this scenario and army lists. tl;dr I played my first Anglo-Zulu War game today with my brother via text message. We used The Men Who Would Be Kings ruleset and a custom scenario to recreate the Battle of Intombi Drift.

The British were deployed in semi-historical fashion on either side of the fords. I didn't have enough wagon models so I had to get creative.

The Zulu's meanwhile were mainly deployed on one side of the board with a single flanking unit deployed on the far side.

As the attackers, the Zulus got first turn. Tribal infantry has an 8" move rate. Each unit type has at least one action they can take for "free": meaning they don't have to test to do it. For tribal infantry their free action is movement. All the Zulu forces surged forward except for both units of Musket-Armed Zulus. They were Irregular Infantry so their "free" action is fire, which means they needed to pass a leadership test in order to move. Unfortunately, both are lead by somewhat poor commanders, and both units failed to move and just stood there uselessly.

Lt. Albert used his heroic leadership to quickly order 1st Section into Close Order and unleash Volley Fire into the nearest group of Unmarried Zulus. 2nd Section joined in. When the smoke clears half the Zulus in the unit have been gunned down, and the rest are pinned in place, stunned by the wall of lead.

Determined to break the British line before it can man the defenses and unleash their full firepower Dabu led his Zulu warriors in a headlong sprint to engage the 1st Section in melee combat.

Alas, this was probably premature. In Close Order the British not only get better firepower, but are able to more easily defend against melee attacks. Combined with the defensive bonuses from defending the wagons, the battle went poorly for the Unmarried Zulu. Ten fall to British bayonets, while three Redcoats were dispatched from Zulu Assegai.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Zulu force continued to advance. Group A was sent across the river to intercept any escaping Redcoats. (This was a mistake - 4th Section had the weakest leader and passing movement checks would have been difficult for them. I should have left him isolated and focused on destroying the main British force first instead of dividing my forces)

Mass British firepower cut down Zulus across the line. Sgt. Sharp, seeing his opportunity to get some bayonet work in, ordered his unit over the wagon laager and into the heart of the advancing Zulus.

Luckily for Sharp the Zulus had been pinned by rifle fire from 1st Section, meaning they only got half as many attacks in melee combat as they normally would have gotten. Four redcoats fall, but they take more Zulus with them, and drive them back.

At this point most of my forces are pinned which means I have to spend the next turn Rallying them, which prevents any other actions and keeps me from utilizing my numerical advantage.

While 1st and 3rd Sections provide the rear-guard, 2nd and 4th Sections begin to escort the wagons down the trail. My two sections close in but there is no good way for me to close the distance without getting shot at a bunch. My Musket-Armed Zulus continue to fail order checks leaving them too far away to do anything.

With 3rd Section beyond the wagon laager I see a chance to destroy a vulnerable unit. I send in B Group. Against 1st Section I throw Group F back into the fray in a desperate attempt to break through their defenses. Meanwhile Dabu led his surviving forces around the British flank. All I really need is one decisive victory in close combat to drive the British back and pin them. Once they're pinned they'll have to stop firing to rally and then I can smash their defenses.

Unfortunately, although both British units take casualties, my attacks are repulsed. I'm whittling the rearguard down, but losing men hand-over-fist. C Group finally gets with the program and advances up the road. Armed only with muskets, their range is pretty short.

Sgt. Sharp once again decides to go in with the bayonet and for the first time the British lose in melee, retreating back behind the safety of their wagons (but not becoming pinned, as I hoped). Meanwhile 1st Section continues to rack up kills, obliterating C Group by killing 10 of them with Volley Fire and driving them backwards.

In the backfield the combined strength of 2nd and 4th Sections is too much for my two units to overcome. Every time my men advance they take casualties and have to fall back.

I decide to move A Group back across the river to help break through there. I assault 1st Section again and while I don't score a victory I do reduce the squad below 5 men, which breaks their Close Order formation. British forces began falling back across the river. Leaving me in control of 4 wagons.

However, my forces were in tatters, with only about 18 men left on this side of the river. Another 12 men were on their way from Group A but I wasn't sure if it would be enough to hold.

Sgt. Sharp led his men in one last charge but then was cut down by spears and muskets from Group C. Unfortunately for me the other two British Sections nearby did not seem particularly troubled at the loss of Sharp's section and were not pinned. Lt. Albert continued to deal out damage from behind a wagon while 2nd Section returned to this side of the river to add firepower.

I traded fire over the wagons with both groups until Albert's section withdrew to avoid being killed. 1st and 4th Section began advancing down the road, which I was powerless to stop as D Group remained perma-pinned with their inept leader unable to rally them.

I did however, see one last chance of victory. My largely intact A Group still had 13 warriors remaining and 2nd Section was down to 10 men. Furthermore, my men were better in melee than the Redcoats, who were outside of their defenses. With a shout my troop went in.

All game I had the weird experience of rolling for both sides and watching 5's and 6's show up whenever I rolled for the British, and 1's and 2's when I rolled for the Zulus. Once again this happened. Despite outnumbering and being better melee fighters, I lost the combat. At this point I ceded the game. I had less than 20 Zulus remaining and saw no way of retaining control of the wagons.

In retrospect I made a couple mistakes: I was too keen to get into close combat. Instead I think bombarding the British with missiles at close range then charging in would have had better results. I also should not have split my forces. My brother also was just luckier than I was, rolling for better commanders and having the dice go his way throughout the game. All in all an interesting experience!

My current go-to for generic caucasian/asian skin colour is this:

1) Start with a dark shade. Usually I start with Vallejo's Cork Brown, but anything in the border between your skin tone and brown works (like GW's Bestigor Flesh). Give the skin a base coat of this.

2) Wash with GW's Reikland Fleshshade. A flesh wash is one of the few things you can't just shade well with black or a generic brown wash IMHO.

Now you can go for quick and dirty, or work with several shades.

Quick and dirty:

3) Just do a highlight with a generic flesh shade (like Vallejo's Flat Flesh or Basic Skin Tone)

More elaborate

3) Re-coat the shin areas with a mix of the starting dark shade (like cork brown) and a lighter shade (like Basic Skin Tone), leaving some shadows.

4) Make consecutive highlights, covering less and less areas, first with just the lighter shade and then the lighter shade mixed with something even lighter (white, a very light grey or beige or similar)

All the mat talk made me want to finally pull the trigger on printing my own. Got the files from Wargame Print who's got an exhaustive list of types and styles. I contacted a local printer who normally does banners and signs for businesses and after talking to them about the materials I settled on getting a PVC and a canvas mat for comparisons.

First up, the PVC mat. I had this printed with a 6" grid for Rommel and To The Strongest! games. 6mm models for scale. This one had a shiny texture and is a bit sticky but I was told this would be less prevalent over time. It's beefy, and does not wrinkle at all. I was told this material is also water resistant and as a bonus you can write directly on it with dry erase markers that wiped easy with no staining.

Next the canvas. This was a lot lighter, folded up and stored easier, but also wrinkled and needed smoothing after laying down. Has a matte finish and feels much more like a natural gaming surface.

It should be noted this is the same tif file printed twice at 6x4 feet. Side by side the sheen is more obvious. Interestingly the PVC has a more vibrant and at very close inspection more 'pixelated' look. But the canvas blends the images a little more naturally. It was more expensive, however, but it just depends on your application and use.

Final thoughts
PVC: cheaper, heavier duty, less organic looking. Would be great for clubs/stores or idiot slobs like me who keep putting drinks directly on the table or RPG people who need to make notes directly on the board. Price for printing $24.
Canvas: pricier, more natural look and feel, blends patterning better. Probably the best choice for a home gamer. Price for printing $33.

Commander Intrigue is "my Precious" after he is deployed the french side puts out a heavy loot counter, it must be in British hands by the end of the game to complete the intrigue!

Deployed back and forth, not using hidden movement for my Indians, as I think I would see through my own ruse. The little green loot counter behind the tree on the brown hill is the precious. starting hands drawn....and time for dinner (also I need to make some stat cheat sheets for myself.

I have to say, the game goes pretty quick, even with my having to look up ranges/modifiers alot. I think would benefit from square bases for facing (or at least painted facings for visual clarity)
wrote down each card and what happened, but just going to give the highlights. Popcorn is smoke markers, because, well we work with what we have.

some civvies jump into a cabin
the Brit lines move forward as no one is visible yet
the French marines open fire on both some civvies in the open and one of the British lines, doing 1 casualty each forcing both to recoil (my first mistake, civilians are cowards and should have fled to face the other direction)

10 cards in:

Brit line goes vigilant (overwatch)
their target makes a run for the cabins and they fire! no hits
the first Indian band makes it to the small cabin and get it lit on fire
Brit line put a punishing shot into the small marine unit and kill one, his fellow (now small unit) marine hoof it back to their poutine at home routing off the table.

20 cards in:

Indians continue into the village, shooting the wounded civilian unit and forcing them to flee after losing 2 more
the other Indians charge the civilian leader, and he wisely runs for it, he unfortunately rolled a 2 to get away and died with a tomahawk in his back.
the Brit lines maneuver and the French marines keep trying to stay out of line of fire, and the 3rd clock is pulled!
the small cabin burns to the ground adding a whopping 9 fire counters to itself

3rd clock:

Could go either way, the French haven't lost too much yet, just 4 guys, but the British line in the south has lined up on the French regulars with what will be a nasty volley if the cards come up in their favor. The need for a dead cabin is out of the way, and the Indians are into the village, but the British irregulars have also got into range.
