For sure it'll hurt a lot of feelings in the possible scenario where Abbott gets the boot. What needs to be seen, though, is what they come out with.

Are you actually going to be shocked when the Labour right get the good appointments and the left are reduced to an absolute rump or the most niche positions if not fully excised?

An opinion expressed (in slightly less direct terms) by a lot of posters in this thread (and around the entire internet) last month. But by all means keep Helldumping someone to try and justify acting like a total oval office to someone. Dig out the posts I made joking about how great politics will be when all the boomers die while you're at it.

There's been some serious Lord of the Flies energy in the last few pages, and I hope people can reflect on this in a few days time and realise that (and what it means more broadly for their politics).

It depends where your scalpel makes the cut on left and right.

I can see Abbott getting the boot, which is a huge token statement that she didn't deserve. Is Rayner's election to the right? Well she's had lovely opinions on trans issues but on the economic front I'd have a hard time saying she's a Tory. As for who else they come out with, if Kinnock becomes a shadow something then I say "yeah, this was misguided"

Losing the NEC seats is almost a bigger self-own for the labour left because as a FPTP contest they were purely about putting up consistent candidate slates. Instead everyone and their grandmother had their own set of left-slates due to petty infighting vs the united slates of Labour First/Progress.

I remain surprised that Long-Bailey did so badly. Only a third of the membership? drat. Owen Smith did better in 2016.

On the deputy race Burgon survived until round three... successfully making enemies, but not displacing them. Of all the big losers here, the Unite faction seems to have fared the worst. Webbe is off the NEC too. Corbyn has urged supporters to join Momentum yesterday.

Yeah I posted about Azza's coronavirus post initially but tbf only a few people called them out on it at the time and there were quite a few other people expressing similar sentiments, including "oh it'll only kill the most vulnerable so it's no big deal" and "more people will die of car accidents every day than coronavirus will ever kill in one day" so it definitely wasn't just them who looks bad in hindsight.

If Corbyn didn't quit Labour through the Blair years I'm pretty sure we can hang on through Starmer.

Personally I'm reserving judgement. We need to remember he's only been an MP since 2015, and despite being an Oxford grad he wasn't exactly born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I doubt he's a proper socialist at heart but from he's at least positioning himself as further left than Blair, Brown or even Miliband.

Best case? He's the palatable face and personality the PLP need to make them get behind more left-wing policy offerings.

Worst case? He tries to take Labour back sharply to the right and the left is cast (again) into the political wilderness for decades. But we'll be back. Socialism or barbarism remains the only choice facing humanity in the long term and we need to be around to offer the 'socialism' bit.

Eyeballing the NEC list it still looks like the left still has a comfortable majority of the seats

The left still has the NCC and will continue to hold it until this year's Conference at least. Starmer has already pledged to abolish the NCC - but that would have to wait until Conference too. So I guess this year's will have especially bitter fireworks, at least if the 'rona subsides by then

Terry knows what he can do with his bloody chocolate orange...

Personally I'm going to wait and see what Starmer actually does, but I'm not optimistic. If he keeps the left policies I'll stick around even if talk and cabinet are very centrist.

Obviously there are some red lines like scapegoating minorities, benefit claimants, immigrants, trans people, etc.

I don't think he's incapable of winning an election (if only because this country is full of people who don't pay attention to politics at all). It'll depend on what he'll do if he wins, and he'll almost definitely be better than the tories. I won't work up a sweat for neoliberal policies, but I'll campaign for leftist ones even if they're being touted by a neoliberal shitter.

It means that Jennie Formby will probably remain as Gen Sec, but other Corbynites who've hosed over more people (e.g. Karie Murphy, Karie Murphy, and erm, Karie Murphy) are dead in the water.
