This thread breaks down the latest manuscript on Chloroquine use. Gives a good nod to the limitations of the study. So far, it doesn't work, but the study is too small to say that certainly. If it was a sure thing this would have at least reflected that, which it did not.

Chloroquine is an anti-malarial, used against a single celled eukaryotic parasite. It's possible that the effects it would have on host cells could interfere with viral replication / maturation etc. This was actually shown to lower viral burden in vitro, but nothing from in vivo or clinical trial data has supported it being useful.

HCQ is an anti-malarial as well as a DMARD (Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatoid Drug). Because it suppresses the immune system the theory goes that it will stop the cytokine storm that kills people with robust immune system from happening. It's not a particularly wrong hypothesis to test.

e: The run on HCQ supply is particularly egregious because people with Rheumatoid Arthritis and other similar auto-immune diseases need them on a daily basis to function. Imagine not having access to the pill that makes it so that your knees and ankles don't feel like flaming knives digging into every gap of your joints so you can get up and live a normal life or even just make it to the washroom so you don't poo poo yourself because a bunch of Trump listening morons bought them all out for a fake cure.

Yeah it's a completely plausible treatment despite the poor to fraudulent studies currently out there boosting it. But there are a hell of a lot more failed plausible treatments in the world than working ones.

You don't throw merely plausible meds at mass patient counts. Especially when you have some nasty side effects just north of viable treatment doses.

Anecdotal evidence is the most irritating thing about talking to a conservative and I didn't realize that until fairly recently.

I'm sure it's related to how conservatives loving love talk radio and get to hear all sorts of anecdotes.

I was more referring to the azithromycin included in the study. I’m fairly certain most of us here have experience with some flavor of chloroquine, and none of it fun or good.

Goddamn is it ever.

I mean, I'm a historian so I live and breath anecdotal evidence because it's what I have to work with in most cases, but drat if I don't think people should strive to be better about this WHEN THERE'S SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE AVAILABLE.

Okay so let me see if I'm following this

Mass ordered a shipment of PPE, which was then confiscated by an undisclosed federal agency when it reached customs

So then they hatched a deal with Robert Kraft to use a Patriots plane to fly to China and pick up another shipment of PPE and bring it directly back without customs getting their hands on this one, effectively smuggling it into the country

Meanwhile the Trumps are saying "no it's OURS, NO SHARING"

Except they're letting companies sell PPE from the federal stockpile direct to hospitals, etc

And they're being allowed to use FEMA assets to do the logistics work for free

If one of the COs had emailed the SECDEF and a newspaper saying "hey I'm gonna go ram a cargo ship" I guarantee they would have been axed a lot sooner.
