The real joke is that Trump slashed costs and removed the parachutes beforehand. And had the cheap engines that failed installed.

I bet this thread has hashed it to hell and back, but... what are the preferred strategies to deal with fox news-poisoned parents? My mother has started to share "just asking questions" videos in the family's main communication channel. Questions such as "corona is a CHINESE BIOWEAPON, carefully prepared ina Chinese laboratory, we must counterattack!!1!1". I have shut that poo poo right down, and called to explain that I don't share fake bullshit, and also that "Oh I didnt make the video, I dont know" is cowardice. And that "well that's a matter of perspective, all data has an agenda" is bullshit, if your argument is that we cant rely on reuters data that criticises china, because it has am american agenda. So yeah... I've been shooting down all of the stupid Shapiroisms, but what else could I do?

I love my parents but I'm never changing their mind that Trump is an amazing gift from God. I should have known when in early 2016 I shared something about Trump on Facebook and my mom told me my dad was nearly in tears because I was "A Hillary lover" (I was the furthest thing from a Hillary lover). Facts have no place in these arguments, so I just do my weekly call to talk about the weather and my dog.

Depending on where it's being shared and what's that's like, you can take a less direct approach by saying 'this isn't a place for politics, it's about family'. My extended family has a Whatsapp channel that is used for family talk, but anyone starting to post political stuff gets brought up short and told to share it elsewhere. It's usually pretty straightforward - 'there are lots of different views in our family, this channel is not for debating them but for sharing about ourselves and keeping in touch. If you didn't write it and it's not about us, it doesn't belong here'. It helps that we've also exiled other stuff in the same way - fantasy league chat got sent to another channel because it was like 400+ posts a day about team management and grandma does not want to see that. If its just mom pounding out her facebook with links, it's tougher to deal with.

This is what gets me, their positions come with so little nuance that you literally can't get them to shift their views slightly. It's always all-or-nothing. If you're not voting for Trump you love whoever runs against Trump. There can't be a problem with Trump, you can't dislike Trump and be a moderate Republican, nobody's actually socialist, there's nothing left of the Democrats except riot mobs... I had SO many problems with Hillary, and still every time I brought up a problem I had with Trump, my relatives would say "Well, HILLARY-" I don't give a poo poo about Hillary. I don't give a poo poo about the DNC. It's like they're trying to win a duel by catching your bullet and throwing it back at your heart, but they have no idea where the gently caress your heart is so they somehow shoot themselves twice.

They are being radicalized and programmed. If you care enough to stop them from finishing this, you have to approach this as a de-radicalization and deprogramming. There is no possibility of approaching them with logic to get this done. It is, at its core, deeply emotionally driven. They want to believe this poo poo, and you need to address that and help them replace it with something that doesn't involve brain worms. It won't be fast. It won't be easy. It won't be clean.

Medullah posted:Facts have no place in these arguments, so I just do my weekly call to talk about the weather and my dog. Earlier today I was so offended by the stupidity that I gave up on a 60yo+ acquaintance. I hope she'll return in a few months but for now I'm not initiating or responding to any coronavirus stuff. If she tells me about the person she knows who is in the hospital, fine, I'll be nice. If she asks how I am, I'll focus on working from home annoyances and progress on my chores. I've never seen this change be quite so rapid, from someone who is actively reading, thinking, and aware, to a person who constantly strawmans, ignores facts and statistics, appeals to false authority, etc. This: This was her story almost 8wk ago. Never mind that the first reported case in the state was the end of January, that she doesn't travel for work, that no one at her Xmas parties was or got sick. Naup, the virus apparently took a quick jet stream trip to infect her the day after Christmas. I've tried twice in the last month but as soon as you mention basic probability and the timeline, the argument becomes "then I won't know until they have an antibody test". For weeks the CDC was stupid, but of course today when I mentioned the WHO recommendations, naup the CDC is the authority. There's a ton of denial and anger floating around with all this. It truly reveals character quickly. I try to always provide links (X dept says this) unless it's an anecdote (shelves were empty). For some, this will be the end, either because "they predicted it and will make it so" or because they'll never recover (mentally, socially, culturally). Others are going to use it as an excuse for everything for the next decade (eg the Presidential election).
