Soap does grow on trees. You burn the tree, you soak the ash, you boil it, skim off the lye, mix with fat... presto! Soap.

Oh you mean you process it and add chemicals.

What exactly is your definition of “chemicals”? Or maybe I should ask if there’s anything you consider a good chemical if fat is too synthetic.

The point is traditional soap is actually super harsh. It's based on lye! Modern body cleaners are usually either liquid or ~cleansing bars~ that are much gentler

Soaps are made from a fat and alkali. Both lye and potash are caustic chemicals used as the alkali. Dr. Bronner uses either, depending on if it's a bar or liquid. That Freshwater Farm bar uses lye, but they list the result of its reaction with palm oil as an ingredient, sodium palmate.

A substance used by or produced by a chemical process. Everything is chemicals, and you're just imposing a false dichotomy of natural/synthetic onto stuff because it makes you feel better.

It doesn't matter if your lipid is coming from an olive tree, or rapeseed, or cow fat, it's all getting mixed with lye or potash from a chloralkali plant. And that's a good think because you've got a lot more control over how and how much alkali ends up in your soap when you're buying pure flakes instead of rendering it from burnt tree ashes.

Just want to make sure I'm clear on this definition. So cooking something makes the kind of chemicals you consider bad? Ceviche must be particularly awful in this case. How about anything using a starch and water? Because ohhh boy howdy that makes a different set of chemical through reaction. Especially when you add extra heat.

So what exactly are you consuming as food?

Do you have any green plants near your house? Because photosynthesis is also a chemical process. Have you ever lit a candle.....or have a gas stove? Or allowed something to rust? drat chemical reactions.

Do you own any batteries? Do you digest food?

You really need to define "produced by a chemical process" is you don't want to sound like someone wearing a tinfoil hat. Or is it your definition of "natural" the thing that is so confusing here? Is me using citrus on fish natural? Explain why or why not. Is human intent the thing that makes it natural or not?

If you understand then explain it.

A lot of people that don't have good definitions talk about "chemicals" and then can't actually define the actual ones they are talking about. They talk about chemicals that have been "produced" but don't have a clear line on what "produced" means. They talk about a "chemcial process" that is bad, but can't define which ones or which classes of chemicla process are problematic.

I want to understand this viewpoint.

I certainly have a general list of problematic chemical compounds that are being produced and perhaps I could back into a set of processes for those. But I'm not the one trying to draw a line in the soap here.

I understand that. The point I’m making is that if you grab a random cheap bar of soap off the supermarket shelf you’ll find a whole laundry list of extra ingredients, many of which aren’t what you ideally want on your skin

I can agree with this in abstract. There's all kinds of dyes and perfumes added to soaps for aesthetic reasons that have nothing to do with skincare and as a result may even be actually bad for it. But that goes for literally every consumer good that has contact with the body.

I just hate when people generalize it to chemicals as though the basic components of soap aren't also chemicals, and then try and throw some natural vs. synthetic framing around it like it's a clear good vs. evil. Most of the time you're just looking at a really crude chemical process vs. a very sophisticated one with different benefits and negatives depending on what you're doing.

Green shitters in general are just the popularity of colored porcelain bathroom fixtures from about the 30's up through the 80's, and brass came in later midcentury when all the gold/silver from art deco started to go out of fashion. But that bathroom in particular I think is a combination of styles due to a renovation. The thurible-looking chain lamps, the carpet, and the paneling are all very 60's, but that light blue-green in the fixtures had its heyday in the 30's.

So it's not a singular vision, unlike this -

I unironically love all of these, even the bright red one that makes my head ache. Wanna drop some shrooms, go take a long bath, and really soak in the colours.

In Finland ofc all bathroom fittings have always been in white and will always be so because Aalto, Arabia, and Nordic Modernism dictate it so. I am jealous of you Yanks and your hosed up post-war toilet stylings, all the hand bidets in the world aren't enough to make up for the lack of avocado- or pastel coloured shitters.
