I've watched Contagion 3 times now while being sheltered in place. Movie owns. I saw it at the theater in the Philippines and was hilariously anxious after.

I've mentioned it before but that superstar EVP at Warner Bros who did all the good trailers you can think of including Inception and Man of Steel had a genius idea to market Contagion that I'm still impressed with.

I'm very down with this.

I also love the filmmaker's premise statement: "Government authority has been decimated after the zombie outbreak in Korea, and there is nothing left except the geography"

Raid II...uh...doesn't hold up as much as the first viewing.

Like the other plots are great and all but the only person you care about it is the guy from Raid I, and he is significantly sidelined for large portions of the movie.

Hard disagree. The Raid and The Raid 2 both hold up extremely well. Just to keep it slightly on-topic to the thread, I'll also point out that The Raid 2 has a deleted scene that has better action than almost any other movie released this decade.

Raid for me was only really made by the contained environment it had. Him just trying a big budget "epic" action film was maybe memorable in say, the trailer and some really good scenes here and there but there was also just lamely choreographed awkward rear end poo poo that would only "work" in an anime like the stupid baseball siblings.

Headshot??? Now that's worth it. Properly ridiculous and worth it alone for the evil "broooo"-dropping white guy minion.

Maybe that's not the right term but some of the hits didn't feel "hard" or "satisfying" during some of the sillier stuff like the baseball bat fighter
I compare something like this to...well, every fight in the first one and i just kinda shrug
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LcQcHfal1o
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmT5qUx1GZ8
Like a lot of the stuff in the sequel felt "bigger" or more expensive or less grounded than the first one and yet the first one still feels so much more dynamic and full of spectacle

I get it and it's something I've heard before. I still think 2 hits as hard as 1, but they're absolutely two different styles and premises (solely connected by their director and main character) so I understand if the immediacy and... I guess, intimacy?... of 1 works for you and 2 just doesn't.

EDIT: I gotta add that Joe Taslim's character's little arc in the first movie is the moment from either of them that stands out the most to me.

Raid 1 is a movie with great action scenes in the middle of a very simple 90 minute story that exists to facilitate those fight scenes. Raid 2 is a movie with roughly the same amount of good fight scenes but trapped inside a really boring 150 minute crime family drama. It's a big step down.

Is this an avatar? I don't know rm dunk

I personally don't like over the top martial arts anymore, if it's presented as "realistic" because I can't stop rolling my eyes when the protagonist and antagonist have been hitting eachother for 5 minutes straight and done zero damage or they just brush things off that would break bones and poo poo

That stuff works in a more fantastical setting like Crouching tiger hidden dragon or something

Even though it's Indonesia you still can't kill the stunt men

I love the balancing act they have to maintain for Muslim terrorists to be in it. “Look, we’ve gotta knock Jesus down a peg, but he’s still gotta be a prophet, otherwise things are gonna get reeeeeally with Mohammad”

I hope the end of this is Jesus (who knows Roman combat) fighting against the time traveling merc and using an M16 to fight back while yelling the word of his Father.

Bonus points if Santos is in this as well and this was a stealth sequel to Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter all along.
