How China weaponized its supply chain

quote:

Damningly, while President Xi Jinping tried to suppress the pandemic brewing in Wuhan, his senior advisors conspired to weaponize China’s medical supply chain by draining high-quality medical supplies from Western sources, flooding desperate ones with bad equipment, and controlling a global position in pharmaceutical manufacturing. This represents a whole new unimaginable concept for Canadian foreign policy to contend with: weaponized medicine.

China Customs press release detailing the volume of PPE imported from overseas in January.

To give you some sense of scale, between Jan 24th & Feb 24th customs inspected and released "2.02 billion pieces of prevention and control materials, valued at 6.53 billion yuan: 1.97 billion protective items, including 1.63 billion masks, 18.62 million pieces of protective clothing, 3.56 million pairs of goggles; 13.55 million pieces of sterilized items; 4.39 million pieces of medical equipment (799,000 were infrared thermometers) & 21.23 million other prevention and control materials."

Fuzhou Daily (pure CCP Propaganda) article detailing United Front Workers, international students & employees from a myriad of Chinese-state companies abroad purchasing PPE and shipping it back to mainland China.

Both of these are official sources from the CCP. Whether or not they deliberately suppressed and continue to suppress the true number of victims in China is, IMO, less relevant than direct evidence that they set out to create an artificial shortage of medical supplies worldwide beginning in January.

Sorry I meant to say I hope that the police use maximum force and kill or maim a bunch of innocent people, thus paving a way for a proletarian uprising and socialist utopia

also here's a stupid take
---------------------------->
I wish that there was a primary source to verify the claim that the CCP actively conspired to drain Western PPE and supply lovely ones in return because that is a bold claim even when talking about the CCP.

It seems more likely to me that this is the result of a combination of the WHO loving up by uncritically repeating Chinese propaganda for two months, convincing Western governments that the spread was contained so that they could safely donate PPE, and garden variety chabuduo and CCP incompetence.

Well, :rip: Big Cannon Ren

https://www.washingtonpost.com/worl...19a9_story.html

Washington Post posted:

An outspoken Beijing property tycoon who wrote an essay blaming Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Communist Party’s “crisis of governance” for the coronavirus outbreak has been placed under investigation, party authorities announced late Tuesday in their latest move to silence and punish voices critical of their response to the epidemic.

Ren Zhiqiang, nicknamed “Big Cannon Ren” for his barrage of critical commentary on Chinese politics and finance, wrote in a widely distributed essay in February that the outbreak in Wuhan was caused by a sclerotic party culture that prized propaganda and flattery toward Xi but silenced free speech.

Ren capped his essay by comparing Xi to “a clown who had no clothes but was still determined to be emperor.”
:bisonyes:

A real estate mogul and Communist Party member who was raised in a distinguished party family in Beijing, Ren has long been seen as enjoying a relative degree of protection because of his personal ties to top figures including Vice President Wang Qishan.

But the formal investigation against him — which is likely to conclude with a prison term — showed the party’s determination to silence critical voices, elite and common alike, at a historically sensitive juncture. Ren disappeared a month ago and is believed to be detained in west Beijing, his friends say.

As I recall their some of their Chinese language documentation mentioned it as possible treatment (like as a holistic/general health thing) while it was gone from the English versions.

Very curious, a country with a massive epidemic importing PPE. Why would that be? I guess we'll never know.

Assuming there's even a grain of truth to it, it's probably the same bullshit that had people repeating it was found for up to a month on a cruise ship. Remnants of the virus can be detected for quite a while. Nothing even remotely infectious, but it was there once.

Yeah, it's equal parts hilarious and horrifying. Shows how desperate the WHO is to retain the China money. I posted it in the China thread, but the US donates 3x as much, and could cough up another third and say, "Just loving forget China's opinions". The fact that the WHO wasn't able to accurately report what was happening in China is proof enough (IMO) that the "benefit" of having people in China isn't worth it. If only there was some giant glaring example of why you should not take official Chinese statements at face value. :v:

Can't really blame the guy on the other end too much, as going against the CCP could have some serious repercussions, "Undermining the state" or something like that.

 ok, this is the China thread.

I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

What benefit to China is having the WHO under it's thumb?

I mean you could argue international prestige, but the CCP gives no fucks about being considered a healthy, or clean country. Then there is maybe the spiteful reason of keeping Taiwan out, thus denying them respectability/legitimacy, and you know medical help from a global body.

Then there is what is happening now, where the WHO gives a global voice, and the veneer of truth to the CCP's attempts to cover up their own negligence.

But do any of these reasons justify the costs, when the CCP could just as easily do what it normally does which is chuck a tantrum and ignore the rest of the world.

The ABC video someone linked mentions it.

I suspect many of them just remained open this whole time, though I don't have any articles about it.

Also, if you are trying to push the idea that eating rare animal parts cures diseases, it seems kind of telling when you close those markets during a disease outbreak.

I fear that this, like many issues, will simply get swept under the rug, and the cycle will repeat again and again until we run out of endangered animals. :sigh:

In an email sent to Game X Change staff on Tuesday and provided to Kotaku by employees who wish to remain anonymous, vice president of retail operations Mindy Kent shares a list of coronavirus safeguards that, she says, was provided to her by a registered nurse in Louisiana. (Kent has yet to respond to Kotaku’s request for comment.) While it does include a few common-sense instructions, such as advising workers to scrub their hands for 20 seconds to kill the virus, most of the claims made in the email are completely unsubstantiated.

Take a sip of warm water every 20 minutes bc [sic] this keeps your mouth moist and washes any of the virus that’s entered your mouth into your stomach where your gastric juices will neutralize it before it can get to the lungs,” reads one tip. This was debunked last week by Dr. Faheem Younus, chief of infectious diseases at the University of Maryland.

Gargle with an antiseptic and warm water like vinegar or salt or lemon every day if possible,” states another. Both the World Health Organization and Johns Hopkins University have labeled this a myth.

“If you cannot wash your clothes daily, hang them in sunlight which also helps to neutralize the virus,” the list continues. Again, the World Health Organization says this is bullshit, albeit with a little more tact than me.

Try to avoid eating and drinking any cold things,” says a fourth guideline, but Harvard Medical School warns this is just more misinformation.
