The Platform on netflix was a great rec, thanks. The plot does give way to the metaphor by the end but I loved the ride.

Our Don Quixote stand in has gone mad on his quest of course. But how was his message received by the administration? I think it was all futile because in a scene out of order in the middle of the film shows the head chef inspecting a cake and seeing if his servants let a hair fall into it. If that was the cake from the end was the boss trying to blame his workers to prevent solidarity between them and the people in the Pit?

so im watching vantage point on cable and maybe its just because the bad mood today but this movie makes the terrorists look really badass and the parts where they have to use blackmail and poo poo to get people to work for them is really dumb and obviously propagandistic

like it kills me how were supposed to know the terrorists are bad because they kill a maid but the one dude keeps harassing the president into murdering a bunch of random people in morocco in retaliation and hes presented as the realist compared to the presidents idealism

doesn't Cuba embrace capitalism and all the returning exiles help make it so the economy flourishes even as the rest of the world is overrun by zombies

also the Israel plot has the vibe of the harsh but pragmatic liberal Zionists being the good guys, against the irrationally bigoted Likudniks

so not exceptionally bad, but like standard liberal brainworms. It's been years since I've read the book, so this could all be wrong.

You're right about the terrible Israel plot about the triumph of "good rational Liberal apartheid colonialists" where the uppity young Palestinian learns to stay in his place and show proper deference to his betters. Because the Israelis are the true victims who selflessly will lay down their lives to protect ungrateful muslims. But the Cuba part is actually kinda strange. The returning exiles are portrayed as villains who the heroic Cubans defeat and put into gulags. Then a bunch of White Americans try to take the country and are put in the gulags too, and the natives are all presented as justified and in the right to do this. Then Fidel Castro (who was still alive when the book was written) retires as a national hero and a big monument to him is in the center of Havana (Though he did pull a Gorbachev with opening up the economy, can't let Socialism win even when it wins amirite?.)

I read a description of this and it started with something like “new thing by Pendleton Ward...” and I was like ok could be good then I read “...and Duncan Trussell...” and was like, wait Joe Rogan’s hippie Salacious Crumb? The one with his own lovely podcast? “...based on Trussell’s podcast” and I immediately started doing a slowmo ohhhhhh noooooo. I have yet to watch this video.

Joe Rogan and Trussell episodes of the podcast were always the best for filling slow days at work because it was like four hours of two complete nimrods being like

DUNCAN: socialists talk about their utopia, right? And *gets excited like a puppy* like it is a utopia because it doesn’t exist and THATS WHAT THE WORD MEANS. But like what does their utopia have; plenty of food, plenty of time to explore your interests, no work that you don’t wanna do, right? What’s that like? *exhales ponderous cloud of blue smoke* LIKE BEING IN THE WOMB.

JOE: woah

DUNCAN: RIGHT? And like what if the idea of socialism is the universe implanting ideas in our minds that will induce a new womb state of culture that will lead us to intellectually gestate into space apes that are finally ready to EXPLORE THE UNIVERSE HERSELF? I still like my PlayStation though and Jordan Peterson was on my show last week and he said I wouldn’t have that with socialism and that would be a bummer so I don’t know where I ultimately fall on the argument *cackles wildly*

JOE: yeah man. I read this article on the dark web the other day that said you’d cum really hard if you hosed in space.

DUNCAN: I BET YOU WOULD MAN

beautiful film, amazing direction and acting, really tight solid script, and an incredible ending — also quite radical in its politics, primarily around gender

check it out!! esp if you like slow burn love stories focused on below the surface tension bubbling up and over a la In The Mood for Love, Carol, Before Sunset, etc

Solar Opposites looks like it could end up being exactly like Rick and Morty just a palate swap on the characters--probably just recycled plots originally meant for Rick and Morty, or it could be a lot worse.

Midnight Gospel looks more interesting. Still very much like Adventure Time, but with more of a sci fi bent.

so im watching the han solo movie midstream on cable and i can see how it got such a meh reaction like never mind fidelity to the han solo character the movie doesnt even understand the archetype han solo is supposed to represent hes a dick who becomes slightly less of a dick over the course of wacky adventures whos this dweeb thats affected by extended emotional appeals and comes up with convoluted schemes instead of just making poo poo up as he goes along

i havent seen the mandalorian but going by this threads descriptions of it i get the impression that the han solo movie is like the spiritual opposite of that although hell even the force awakens understood han solos underlying archetype i suspect this is mostly because they talked harrison ford into reprising the role but at least he managed to spend the whole runtime angry and pissed off that he made some bad lifestyle decisions that were very unsubtly coming back to bite him in the rear end

On the one hand becoming political has made it harder for me to enjoy a lot of movies I might have had before because I now see and disagree with their politics. On the other hand now it's entertaining to watch politics/status quo/consensus/whatever change through different eras. 9/11 overnight made it so "Rebels" could no longer be the heroes in anything. All our media was now about how great crushing resistance was. Then Obama gets elected and now it's okay to be a Rebel again, but instead of rebelling against foreign conquerors it's rebelling against your own subverted government.
