Premise is right, but conclusion is wrong. The specifically capitalist part of the economy, the stock market, is actually doing great. It’s the real, labour-theory-of-value economy that is hosed. People aren’t going to work at the factory that makes the machine that makes the tractors that sow the fields, or the college that teaches them to use it. Right now, none of those are essential (which is true, in the short term), and none of them can be done from home. If nothing changes for 6 months or so, then the only thing capitalism will be doing is answering the question ‘given the available food, who gets to eat it?’.

Which is why Oxfam are warning of _half a billion_ at risk of starvation, and the stock market is up 10%. The former is not a problem to the latter

Wait, so let me get this straight. The police are threatening to root through people's shopping for 'unessential items'. So if they find a tub of ice cream amongst your bread and corned beef they're implying they might take it and write you up for it? I kind of understand if you're going to the shops every other day to stock up on tube after tube of pringles and nothing else but I completely fail to see the harm in picking up some sweets or whatever while you're already there anyway. This seems like it could be solved completely by just adopting the 'take paperwork when you leave the house' approach because it would dissuade people from going every other day for frivolous stuff while still allowing them to get whatever the hell they like when they do go. I guess loving everything up at every possible juncture and making things worse for everyone is very on brand for Brexit Britain.

Maybe I could get some form of easily identifiable marking on my clothes to indicate I have diabetes and therefore must be permitted wine gums, 10/10 precedent.

I think it's less about the contents of shopping baskets and more about getting people to stop making pointless trips every day. They're just poo poo at explaining it.

So here's a question: how much more "improving" can Boris' health do before he's a paragon of the human form? He was admitted a few days ago for routine tests, but with only mild symptoms. Immediately goes into ICU, and has been "improving" ever since. Obviously at some point they've been bullshitting everybody about his condition, but I wonder which bit in particular they were lying about.

Lol I've just had a row with my sister-in-law on our family WhatsApp because she was so proud they managed to find a garden centre that was open for "essential supplies" and bought a load of bedding plants. She was using the "Well if it's selling essential supplies then it's okay" argument, on the day I've been silently mortified with myself because I went to a pet shop* that was a couple of miles further away than I needed to to make sure my bike got a proper temperature cycle** after two weeks sitting.

Not that I'm in any position to condemn anyone, but apart from the City, the roads in London still seemed way too busy - much more "nice Sunday afternoon" than "3am in mid winter". Way, way too many construction vehicles, for a start, but at least no loving tourist coaches.

* To get my justifications in - I *could* have ordered the specialist food for delivery, but a) I'd rather keep the delivery slots open for others who really need them and b) see below
** While you *can* leave a motorbike for a couple of months with no ill-effects, I'd still rather make sure that I don't get corrosion in the oilways and coolant loop, perished tyres and belts, and rusty chain and brake disks the fun way, and a 5-mile trip does the trick.

Although to be fair, the Blitz is probably the most comparable. I would say we're well on target.

To put some more context around those numbers - the most intense period of the Blitz (the almost-nightly raids of November 1940 to February 1941) killed around 20,000 people in London - we're already *way* past that death rate.

The biggest raid of that period, the "Second Great Fire" - 29th December 1940 - killed "only" 160 people, actually a lower number than some of the other raids because they were concentrated almost solely on the docks along the river and St. Paul's, so there weren't as many houses destroyed.

The very worst night of the Blitz - 11th May 1941, where they pretty much threw the entire Luftwaffe just at London, *twice* - caused 1500 deaths, and we're really not far off that as a daily death toll now.

The "baby Blitz" - the V1 and V2 campaigns and the last strategic bombing raids - managed a measly 10,000 deaths over a year.

And if you want to get down to individual disasters - the worst casualty count from a single bomb was the V2 that struck a crowded Woolworths in New Cross, killing 160 people, or about as many as died in 4 hours yesterday. Every hour we're losing as many people as died at Bullivant's Wharf, the worst death toll caused by a hit on an air-raid shelter.
