Shyrka posted:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest_Memorandum_on_Security_Assurances Nukes, especially ICBMs, are super unuseful for guaranteeing regional sovereignty because you can’t set them off without also destroying yourself. Pakistan has this problem with their tactical weapons. If they have them at the frontline of a battle and they start to lose, they risk them all getting captured, so they are committed to a nuclear exchange which would not go well for them, but if they don’t have them in range then they don’t play much of a role in warfare. Despite decades of mythology of nuclear weapons being the ultimate weapon, they might be so destructive that they can’t really be used as or considered weapons at all.

dex_sda posted:1 in 300 is going too far but yes it's likely that with asymptomatics included the rate is below 1%. So multiply by a hundred and you got a good idea. People really need to stop assuming there's some vast hidden reserve of asymptomatic people. A lot of the studies showing a high proportion of asymptomatic cases aren't making any claims about the actual asymptomatic rate, they're only claiming that a large proportion of positive tests in a random sample are showing no symptoms at the time of testing. They say nothing about whether those people eventually do get sick or not. We've known for months now that viral shedding is highest before symptoms begin, so it makes sense that a random sample would turn up a large proportion of people who are infected, by not yet showing symptoms. China just released some data showing the asymptomatic rate at just under 5%, and only 10% of people on the Diamond Princess were asymptomatic carriers. The flu's asymptomatic rate is 15-20%. The original SARS had an asymptomatic rate of 13%. Given the current ~3.5% CFR in the US none of those asymptomatic rates come even close to reducing it below 1%.

it's kind of good news that the asymptomatic rate isn't crazy high because it means this can definitely be controlled, as china and south korea have shown unfortunately that requires a competent government so lol let the lung juice flow
