They say nothing about whether those people eventually do get sick or not. We've known for months now that viral shedding is highest before symptoms begin, so it makes sense that a random sample would turn up a large proportion of people who are infected, by not yet showing symptoms.

China just released some data showing the asymptomatic rate at just under 5%, and only 10% of people on the Diamond Princess were asymptomatic carriers. The flu's asymptomatic rate is 15-20%. The original SARS had an asymptomatic rate of 13%. Given the current ~3.5% CFR in the US none of those asymptomatic rates come even close to reducing it below 1%.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - There were around 2,000 more deaths in the Netherlands in the first week of April than would normally be expected, its statistics office said on Friday, likely the result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) showed around 5,100 deaths registered in the country in the week ended April 5, compared to around 3,200 a week in the same period a year ago, and 3,100 a week in early 2020 before the country registered its first COVID-19 case in late February.

The CBS numbers are complementary to data released by the country’s National Institute for Public Health (RIVM), which registers only coronavirus cases that are officially diagnosed. The RIVM reported 881 coronavirus deaths in the same period.

Given the virulence of these ailments and the scientific ignorance of the island’s early settlers, it is hardly surprising that epidemics were blamed on malevolent spirits. Then as now, Taiwanese beseeched their gods for protection. Many people wore sachets of incense ash gathered from temples, similar to the amulets that now dangle from rearview mirrors in cars and trucks across Taiwan.

These notions and habits were carried to Taiwan by migrants from the China mainland. As Carol Ann Benedict explains in her book Bubonic Plague in Nineteenth-century China (Stanford University Press, 1996), in southern China plague-god festivals “were periodically held in many communities as prophylactic measures against epidemics; similar rituals were held after an epidemic had broken out. Lasting about a week, the jiao (醮, sacrificial rites) included days of elaborate temple rites and liturgies, culminating in a large processional designed to expel all remaining plague demons and send the plague god back to heaven. This was done by placing the wenshen (瘟神, “epidemic gods”) on massive boats (wenchuan, 瘟船, “plague boats”) made of paper or grass that were then burnt or floated away.”

Within Taiwan, the term wangchuan (王船) is preferred to wenchuan. Two major ritual boat-burnings are celebrated each Year of the Goat, Year of the Dog, Year of the Ox, and Year of the Dragon – timing inspired by the triennial inspection tours made by mandarins in ancient China. The best known of these is the King Boat Festival (迎王平安祭) organized by Donglong Temple (東隆宮) in Pingtung County’s Donggang Township.

I’m watching an amazing YouTube channel about raising ants called Ants Canada. the guy is a great narrator and is basically the youtube Attenborough.

it got to a part where he talks about a worker ant going to a pile of larvae and eggs and digging into the pile until he finds one at the bottom and feeds it. how does it know to feed one at the bottom? the host speculated that the larva releases pheromones that signal its hungry, and the workers make sure every larva gets fed, even at the bottom of the pile. the host says no larvae go hungry or left behind unless everyone goes hungry.
