UK has always had the doctrine to not tell the public anything that would interest them, since we're not a democracy whats the point in getting the peasants riled up? since this whole thing would interest the public theyr struggling so hard not to say anything at all and even the "good" ones, their only action is to ask the govmt a question they can lie about. its like if a journo knows that only 12 tests have been carried out but the govmt says 12,000,000, instead of saying "only 12 tests have been carried out, you liar" they say "exactly how many tests HAVE been carried out minister?" and wait for the lie. not that it matters anyway, if they did say the former thing the politician would just outright lie with no consequences anyway

It's good that covid 19 will break so many people's routines from buying a paper regularly that the printed press may well see a real collapse of influence but it's bad because it's not like any online or BBC reporting is actually any better and the fragmenting of news sources will probably still only benefit the right wing sites.

Most of the time you're also straight out of undergrad and have only ever done lovely service sector work, and have no idea how to perform doing a theoretical 8 hours a day reading/researching/benchwork/whatever, so you sort of have to invent standard work practises de novo. Even if your supervisor is a decent person with good intentions you'll probably only see them for an hour every couple of weeks, from what I can tell most supervisors are bastards and will use this time to gently caress you around and drive you insane. Not that it does you any good now but the trick is to find a PI that you can work with. If you want structure find one that hovers over all your poo poo, theres tons of people out there like that. the example from the IHRA that I'm most concerned about is the "racist endeavour" one, because Israel is a racist endeavour by any reasonable metric and I can't see how you can consider an explicit ethnostate built on ethnic cleansing and apartheid to be anything else with any degree of intellectual honesty which is not to say that lots of other countries aren't also racist endeavours, but I can't get thrown out of the Labour party for saying that america/Britain/Australia/canada/every country in western Europe or descended from Western europeans were all built on slavery, genocide and exploitation and are still deeply, deeply racist societies without exception like if I'm not going to be allowed to "hold Israel to standards that other democracies aren't held to" (another nebulous phrase that could apply to pretty much any criticism of Israel you wanted to deem anti-Semitic), I'm not sure the IHRA can declare holding Israel to the same standards as other democracies to be antisemitic as well
