Well see, providing shelter and basic needs as well as social programs to help the downtrodden, and that sounds dangerously like socialism. And socialism is bad because some assholes east of Europe liked it and thus it should never be implemented again

If it's actually a basic mean of survival that makes it even worse. Sort of. America is a marketing gimmick. America is the pitchman, the huckster. It has always been this way and Donald Trump is the symbol of it. When we look at "Give me your poor, your huddle masses yearning to be free" we think it is meant as a great nation helping those who need it and giving them opportunity but to the people in power it means "I need a cheap exploitable labor force who can't fight me." Americans are a tax farm to fund the military so Clinton and Wall Street can go do war for resources in the middle east. The few times socio-economic progress was made, Theodore Roosevelt busting conglomerates and FDR doing the New Deal (which in part was because he was left with little option), America became a super power, went to the moon, and created a middle class that created a mega economy. Of which the last 40 years has been spent eroding it to return to a second gilded age. Even worse, amongst the majority of Americans there is a certain self loathing where they hate their neighbor, do not want to have their lives improved, and cannot look in the mirror to admit it and prefer to be told lies about who they are and what exists because they prefer the cognitive dissonance. It helps them feel okay about themselves and sleep at night OR even worse, they really just don't give a poo poo at all. Depends on your assumption about other people I guess. I also think this is why so many need to have their ego stroked rather than do the right thing because it is right and just and good for people.

the average american can't remember things getting better in a real, lasting way, and those who can only have it as a vague childhood memory. in those circumstances its natural people are more worried about things getting worse, or things getting better for everyone but them, than the idea of things getting better for them.

I haven't found a nice clean chart for H1N1 during that period, but apparently the CDC had an estimated 3,900-6,100 H1N1 attributable deaths in the first 6 months, which would likely, given the exponential increase, be something like 15-18 deaths in two months.

The reason these politicians want to privatize everything is 1. they're the donors who fund them and 2. the Oligarchs become the gateholders to power which is why the Republicans for the last 40 years have been about privatization because they were shut out of a lot of things otherwise.

Paying for FedEx/UPS shipping for all items would turbofuck online retail in general, which is extremely bad in a situation where people will probably be reluctant to take too many trips into stores for years to come. edit- I don't live in anything even remotely approaching a rural area and USPS last-mile covers at least a third of the online packages that come here Paradoxish fucked around with this message at 20:11 on Apr 12, 2020 |

Old slow fucks that do nothing but complain about the union they don't pay into that gives them a decent setup, hands them grievance settlements, and without they'd be dropped on their rear end. As late as last week one was making a big show of hugging another in the morning and some dipshit tried pulling out the "just the flu" earlier this week. It'd be nice if they had to deal with the fallout of the politics they support but the decent people were spared.

Yeah, private capital is on our side in this. Too much of the country, too much business, and too much money is riding on the post office and Congress will be collectively leant upon to rescue it.

It's really loving hilarious how much Americans love to complain about socialism while the US economy is practically state-run already. More than a third of US GDP is just direct spending from the federal, state, and local governments, and that's literally just direct spending. Every single person in this country is effectively paid at least in part through tax dollars, it's just a question of how many degrees of separation removed from it you are.
