Lady Militant posted:As compared to the rest of the world? In a discussion with my department lead a few weeks ago he mentioned how awful basically every U.S. polling company was at accurately judging outcomes within margins of error that would never be accepted elsewhere. We then talked about the factors of why that might be and at no point was the idea that "americans intrinsically cannot do statistical analysis" floated. A lot of the academic bias towards China is mainly (at least in my field) focused on anything they publish about themselves, because there is huge amounts of interference and oversight by governmental bodies who adjust the publications to meet party lines. There are several other countries where this is also the case, and where even foreign academics have to follow the governments play book if they want to publish there, which in many cases is good (Goverments should not be beholden to the whims of foregin, often white academics). However it gets real lovely when they basically want to use your works has propaganda pieces and adjust it accordingly. Telsa Cola has issued a correction as of 19:07 on Apr 13, 2020 |

mastershakeman posted:man thats weird, i spent a huge portion of my life just wandering around neighbors' forests and old railroad tracks and poo poo Yeah it's probably way the hell different now but when I was growing up, the gulf coast armpit of FL still had a patch of largely unmanaged woods behind practically everyone's house, or at the end of the block. Not any huge forest reserve or anything but enough room to gently caress around with paintballs and not risk putting holes in anyone's patio screens. Just walking around with your friends in the woods was a thing, you'd find some old bottle on the ground and throw it at a tree until it broke or find and laugh at forest porn, etc. I mean I don't want to get all but between sprawl and the insipid paralytic lure of social media it kinda sucks if a lot of kids these days don't have a familiarity of being outside without close shelter (e.g. having to walk as far back out as you came in) because any legitimate mass movement is going to have unrest and stuff where you can't just gently caress off home and pick it up tomorrow lest the cops block you out overnight.

That's understandable. From my own fields perspective the idea that china only can produce junk is an ingrained bias from the fact china has historically produced cheap things, and as the saying goes "you get what you pay for". It's obvious from the progress to advanced forms of manufacturing in recent years there isn't some hard fast rule that china can only make cheap stuff. The example my professor used of people being dumb about china was that you'd have engineers constantly complaining that an instrument they ordered for 50 dollars from china isn't as accurate as a 500 dollar instrument from a u.s. supplier while never stopping to consider that maybe theres a reason one is 10 times cheaper than the other.
