seattle plague rat posted:e: also tell me about getting married and moving to canada on a PR if youre bored and know anything The PR process for a spouse takes a year. if you can get express entry PR because of your education do that instead it's much faster. It takes even more time if you are applying from abroad than if you are applying from within canada. If you are applying from within canada you need to be here legally when you apply and you can apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit Bridging application at the same time as you apply for the PR, which covers your status while you apply. the application for any visa is 4 months and if you make a mistake on your form you wont find out for 1-2 months after you mail it in. so dont get caught in a situation where your visa will expire during the PR application time. just renew your work visa for 3 years first and then start the PR application. I recommend that before you start the process of PR get (or have) a work visa and make sure it is valid for 1.5 or more years from the time you start the process. this will make your life easier because if there is a lapse in your status you're going to have a bad time. you're especially going to have a bad time if you're pregnant and your visa expires before you give birth. ok that's just advice about getting your life in order before you even apply. lets talk about the process. To do a spousal visa will take about 1-2 months of paperwork on your part before you mail it to them and it takes them a year to complete your application. Cost -Sponsorship fee $75 -Principal Applicant Processing Fee $475 -Right of Permanent Residence Fee $490 -Biometrics Fee $85 -Work Permit Extension processing fee $155 -Open Work Permit Fee $100 (p.s. fees change so this is a ballpark) -immigration doctor visit and xray ~$1-$200 -mailing stuff with registered tracked mail a bunch of times $100+ -translation of documents $? -photocopying and printing pictures <-- buy a printer you will print A LOT of papers. -police reports $35 Forms find IMM5533e.pdf. this form has the checklist of everything you need if you're being sponsored as a spouse. it's somewhere here. https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/spouse.asp Proof ok so this is a little different for everyone but in general you need: -proof of residency (bills with your address, ID with your address, address of everywhere you have worked and lived in the last 10years) -proof of relationship (20 photos of you together, proof of shared expenses meaning bills with both names, marriage certificate translated to english/french) -proof of citizenship (passports, national ID's, birth certificate) -proof of marriage (marriage cert, ceremony pictures) -proof of income (T4's for the sponsor showing they can support you financially, proof of employment from your company) -police checks (you're going to need a police check for everywhere you have lived) If you are married for 2+ years already that will lower the amount of things you need to provide as proof of your relationship. my other advice is to get the worlds greatest filing system before you start this poo poo because you will have too many goddamn papers to count. If you can afford a professional to act as your representative and do it for you then do that.

you're still gonna have to deal with american taxes they just don't take extra money most of the time, however if I remember right there's literally zero penalty for not bothering they just really want you to, also the american government can look through any bank accounts with your name on them that you open in canada including ones shared with non-americans

seattle plague rat posted:my understanding is i can't do any work that requires a SIN or would be covered under a work visa, but that i can continue working for my UK-based employer and pay American taxes while i am a visitor I really dont know. what you posted sounds correct. if you have residency in USA then you should pay taxes there until you formally change your residency by moving. the immigration attorney will know better than me. a couple of other things i can tell you to help. - the online portal for canadian immigration does not record that they have received your visa/PR/other application if they reject it before processing it. by this i mean that they received insufficient funds and returned it to you. if you have a delay where you get no info from them then call them up and ask what's going on. - you can only link an application to one GCKey account online. you can view your application progress but your spouse cannot view your application progress. - you can use the online submit a question form on the CIC website to ask questions about your application. the reply can be used if you need proof that you have applied for your work visa. you cannot get this proof until about a month after you have mailed it because they havent started processing it yet. you might need this proof if you need something from service canada (like a benefit) or something from the provincial health authority (e.g. health coverage). - health coverage in ontario kicks in after 3 months of working there but you probably need to apply. i'm not sure about other provinces but it's probably similar. dont assume that you need health insurance for the entire year until you get your PR. you should be eligible for the government stuff. - your SIN number is tied to your work visa expiry date. if you cannot access your service canada account this is because your visa expired (the system locks you out). you need the work visa to get the SIN and the SIN to get healthcare.
