i don't see a lot of evidence that they're anything but a social media feed and maybe a podcast right now. no local chapters seem to exist, no "this is what our organisation exists to achieve", no real names or other organisations validating or attached to it

Someone from the org answered a question on reddit, and they do seem to be new.

I'm skeptical too, as they ask for money for membership, but with all the publicity the DSA is getting in the States, I can understand why they might be forming this now.

I'll reach out to someone and see what response I get.

Like, what DO we spend our money on? Pallister has banged into our head this notion that we have no funds....but what the gently caress are we spending money on? I wish there was a way to find out the history of how this province evidently became the poorest province to the point where we can't provide basic things to people.

mostly schools and health, "Families" is welfare and child protection

Also one of the higher taxed and higher spending provinces - provincial revenue as % of GDP was 23.4% last year, compared to 14.4% in Alberta, 19.3% in BC, 17.7% in Ontario, and 26.1% in Québec (I think the Québec number is not strictly comparable to other provinces?)

Manitoba is just kinda poor, has the largest indigenous share of any province (and a huge share of Manitoba's indigenous population is urban, so services to them are provided by the province, not the federal government), and didn't luck out in the oil lottery.

it's a real tough budgetary situation

provincial revenues include crown corps not just taxes which makes sense why manitoba is higher. we havent sold off every piece of public enterprise... yet

anyways good job on blaming it on indigenous people

well guess what idiot, between that and taxes, turns out there’s no other way to pay for anything so enjoy this place spiralling further into a loving privatized deregulated hellhole from which there is no escape

you can’t run a poor province country or city like a business because it’s not designed to make money and it has none to begin with

abolish the Twitter class

that line is funny because the pcs have literally cut as far back at hydro as possible while raising rates to pour that extra money into revenues so they can cut services and taxes

oh come on

settler canadians have spent a few hundred years of genocide and paternalism making sure indigenous folk stay poor and haven't had control over their futures. saying that provinces with more indigenous folk are poorer isn't blaming them, it's blaming us.

Semper Shitpost Ubique

I’ve had multiple people angrily rant that Ontario Parks and Parks Canada should open up, but only for backwoods camping.

I won’t lie, I like the romantic idea of it, but the plan feels wrong. I know everyone wants to play mountain man, and to the more experienced outdoorsmen cooped up inside, there’s the case to be made “what’s the difference?”. Still, this has got to be a bad idea right?

The best I’ve been able to come up with is that if you turn out to be in the asymptomatic stage of the disease, in two weeks you’ll need an air ambulance out of the depths of Algonquin Park when you suddenly can’t breathe. It seems like a huge risk for no real gain for society.

Even having Park Rangers show up to work in the middle of all this to keep an eye out for Torontonians who thought they’d play backwoods adventurer seems like a liability. The loudest proponents for this idea are people I know go either car camping, glamping or at best hike moderate trails a few times a year. I feel like letting them loose on the backwoods with no supporting infrastructure can only end badly, since for all the North Face and Patagonia, MEC isn’t there to kit them out and hold their hands this time around.

People who don't qualify can just sign up anyway, they aren't checking. Also the only penalty for applying and not qualifying is "you have to pay the money back later". I don't know if this was intentional but they basically created an automatic loan for anyone who needs it.

I'd love to get my covid bucks, but apparently my CRA account is locked and can only be unlocked via calling their hotline. Which is so overwhelmed I don't even get the opportunity to wait in the 2-hour line, it just automatically hangs up on me after I spend five minutes wandering through the menus.

I learned last year that you need to log into CRA a couple times a year or they just lock it like that. Kinda dumb when I have to think people don't log in outside of tax time normally.

That CERB language is so loving vague I'm almost tempted to apply for it and pay off my credit card and hope for a non-clawback. Some parts of it, at least as of yesterday, seemed to imply it was if you "could" lose employment within 14 days which tbh is almost everyone except maybe nurses

Absolutely do this. The most likely scenario is they will forgive everyone that applies because money is needed NOW, and they have plenty to give. I applied earlier than the end of my work as a TA, confirmed instantly and I don't care if they want the money back later. 'Take it from my nonexistant income taxes, fuckers'

Cross-posting from covid thread cause my day was bad. gently caress Grocery Stores

Horrible day at the grocery store. We had a bunch of rules on customer conduct to make things safe, but a few customers complained about the restrictions. So head office repealed these restrictions, its just a free for all now. Total chaos, no one knows what to do, morale plummeted. Even the store's second is openly talking about how the company is putting profits ahead of our safety. Someone brought up a walkout, but generally people need to work to survive.

Had a boy and girl come in today that couldn't be more than 6 and 10, telling us they were 10 and 14 (I work with kids a lot normally, they were not as old as they said), said they had to go for groceries alone, in PJs, because their whole family was sick and no one else could go. I dealt with them, and got management involved, as it sounded horrific. I was assured something would be done, but I later saw them walk out with bags of junk food. Another employee told me they helped them shop and pay, and then we just let them walk out of the store and walk home alone. Can't believe that was allowed to happen. The whole situation sounded hosed.

Just kinda haunting me right now.

I haven't lost my job yet and they committed to keep us employed until at least September but I guess they don't need to know that. $2k for each my wife and I would go a long way to getting out of hellberta
