I don't buy it. I mean yeah, he does want that, but I think Trump genuinely sees HCQ as his opportunity to be the hero who finds the One Weird Trick that ends covid-19 and gets him all the praise he deserves.

He does this with everything. He always has to introduce X as "nobody ever heard about X", like he's the one who found X and deserves the credit for introducing it to the world.

Oh for sure, but at this point I'm sure he legitimately believes that it is actually a cure that isn't being used because evil democrats don't want to give him credit for fixing things.

None of us really know what's going to happen. This is some unprecedented and chaotic poo poo. If you're looking for stability get involved in your local politics and/or mutual aid. However this things ends up shaking out, our local communities will still be more important to our lives than national (or whatever replaces it) politics.

/\/\/\ Yeah that will be the short term effect.

Secession is an extremely costly process that would require many years of planning, so I don't think states are just going to leave on a dime right now.

Whether this is a sign of longer term trends which could lead to secession years from now maybe I don't know.

The fear that these ad hoc committees will lead to a full-blown split of the US is both overblown and misses the most interesting part of this development, IMO. As the joke says: if only these states could somehow pool their resources into some sort of continent-spanning nation, imagine what they could accomplish!

The states wouldn't be doing this if the federal government were capable of doing its job. Instead they've been left to improvise this solution because federalism is no longer working, at least in this present crisis. It's a big--if so far mostly symbolic--blow to one of the governing philosophies behind the Constitution delivered by actors working within the system.

If the crisis is ended miraculously tomorrow then these agreements may just blow away, but stuff like this may grow more and more prominent if we continue on our present course of polarizing presidents and deadlocked Congresses.

I’m reminded of the dialogue here last year when AL/GA/etc started passing those grotesque abortion bans and people were imagining a hypothetical post-Roe America where different blocs of states would have extradition/protection pacts.

anyone have any ideas why the republican numbers were so low this time?

-Voter enthusiasm, or lack thereof.

-Despite the dismissive official rhetoric from the top, or echoed on social media, most GOP WI voters weren’t actually willing to risk contamination enough to go vote in practice.

-the WI GOP has been hemorrhaging actual support since walker won the recall, and their trickery has had to get increasingly convoluted and precarious to maintain control. If you say "universal health care won't happen under Democrats because Biden, Pelosi, and Schumer don't want it" you're a white-noise nothing-matters member of the dirtbag left and you probably love Republicans and voted for Trump I bet.

But if you say the same thing with the proper vocabulary, something like "even a unified Democratic trifecta must still operate within the bounds of contemporary political reality to balance the desires of a subfaction of their constituencies vis a vis the need to run strongly-funded campaigns and maintain electability, therefore universal healthcare will not be an immediate goal but a long-term aspiration whereto the arc of history shall ineluctably bend" then you're a wise pragmatic politics knower.

It's really quite simple.

The Wisconsin GOP has pulled every voter suppression trick available to it, but ultimately its greatest strength is its horrific gerrymander. The problem for them is that the gerrymander can't help them in statewide elections, and they're starting to seriously underperform in them again. The rest of the voter suppression measures aren't keeping pace.
