If elections are canceled it doesn't matter if the senate has a dem majority, because the senate would never ever convene again

One More Fat Nerd posted:2) Joe Biden has the massive advantage of "not being Hillary Clinton", which boosted turnout in older mainstream Dems, and by itself may be enough to propel him to victory in the general. I disagree with a large part of the sentiment behind this. I think both Biden *and* Hillary did better than any of the other non-Bernie also-rans this cycle would have done if they were running. While you're correct that Biden has a strong advantage with older voters compared with Hillary, I think both of them have an advantage over some dramatically lesser known figure like Klobuchar or Buttigieg or whatever. Basically, I think both Biden and Hillary Clinton likely did better than the vast majority of other Democratic politicians could have done, due to being some of the very few "extremely well-known" Democrats left. edit: I think the reason for this is that, because Democratic politicians don't actually run on anything substantial, they can only motivate voters through being associated with a positive time in the past. With Hillary, it made many older voters think "she'll do whatever Bill did to make the 90's good." With Biden, they think "I liked Obama, he'll be like Obama." None of the other plausible Democratic candidates have that, because they don't actually have anything in their platforms worth voting for (as opposed to Bernie or other left-wing candidates, who will always have some strong base of support from here on out). Thompsons posted:I mean they really get snotty when people ask them if they're planning on canvassing precisely because they know as well as we do that they're not going to do it Well, actually participating in the campaigning is gauche, especially when they know that all the poor people and minorities secretly agree with them and will do that for them. King of Solomon posted:Sad, but not unexpected. Bernie is too good of a person. Nothing good about that; it's confusing "good" and "nice." Ytlaya has issued a correction as of 21:40 on Apr 14, 2020 |

Sheng-Ji Yang posted:definitely not I used to think so too, but I've changed my mind recently. The political writers who try to define populism always do so from a centrist or right-wing perspective, so they lump progressives in with the right-wing nationalists who practise actual populism, like with horseshoe theory. Yanis Varoufakis talks about it a bit quote:When I scored the largest parliamentary majority in Greece’s general election two years ago, I too was portrayed as a populist. For the establishment, anyone who does well electorally by challenging its favourite sons and daughters is dismissed as a populist. But this lets populists off too lightly. A populist promises all things to all people, while preying on their superstitions and fears. In contrast, when I ran for parliament I quoted Winston Churchill in promising “blood, sweat and tears” as the price of our liberation from debt bondage and from Greece’s oligarchy. In financial terms, I did not promise a single euro to anyone making more than €700 monthly. The election outcome proved that anti-establishment politicians can gain popularity by eschewing populism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H38tZhPying&t=2623s this clip relates why the right is able to define or manipulate how progressive's project their strength https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H38tZhPying&t=910s

One More Fat Nerd posted:I think going hard negative on Biden would have ended up being taken as going negative on Obama by proxy. While C-Spammers would have loved that, its probably the worst move you could make in a Dem primary. Plenty of Bernie voters still have warm feelings for Obama. Nah the only possible winning move was to have a warchest on hand to launch the campaign with an ad blitz and absolutely loving nuke Obama into oblivion. Clips of Obama claiming to be a republican, trying to gut social security, bailing out the banks, perpetuating the foreverwar, sending his daughter to work for weinstein, loving off after the election to hang out on Billionaire Island, and cap it off with "Barack Obama was so cynical that he chose a guy who said racist things about him to be his VP in a false show of magnanimity and didn't even care that he was probably a sex pest." Just day after day of "Trump is Obama's fault, he hosed up and that's what allowed this to happen, WE. WON'T. >:[" So basically we needed to transplant C-spam directly into Bernie's old noggin to win, hopefully it will be easier in 4 years when everything is even more hosed up.
