It's more that he raised that money purely due to the promotion it got from the BBC. He was on track for just a fraction of his current value he got until the BBC publicised it and turned it into a facebook style "BRITAIN'S GOT SPIRIT" event.

Fair play to him doing that at his age, but i'm more annoyed that the BBC are getting away with the misuse of this power.

I.e. Why's piers Morgan the one sticking it to the government while the BBC are distracting the public with feelgood notions of the NHS being bailed out by charity and fundraising.

Edit: I mean, it's raised 13 million just now, and we've got celebrities chipping in with feel good comments for him when they could easily be matching his total by themselves. Meanwhile piers morgan is asking the health secretary why they aren't taking a pay cut like they asked footballers to do.

If you want a proper lefty union the IWW is the one. Not involved with Labour, and far far more radical than any of the others, apart from the IWGB and it’s affiliates who are about at that level.

That's out of 500k clinical staff vs. 26 out of 28k TfL staff, so it's actually *over* ten times the rate, and nearer 20 times if you count all the non-clinical staff.

The Right to the City
A Verso Report
Edited by Verso Books

Special eBook collection on the most urgent question of our times: who is the city for?

In 1968, the French Marxist philosopher Henri Lefebvre wrote “Le Droit a la Ville” (“The Right to the City”), which has become one of the most essential texts in radical geography and urban studies. It transformed the way we think about urban life and the right to make and remake our cities, and ourselves. Fifty years on, the question of who is the city is for, and why, is more urgent than ever.

In this special Verso report, some of the most important voices in the current debate on the right to city are gathered to debate what Lefebvre originally intended and what it might mean today within the neoliberal urban world. How these ideas help us to understand the contemporary struggle in housing; how to protest gentrification; the privatisation of public spaces; and the demand for places of self expression, and the security of home. The collection also explores how these ideas can be used in other fields—such as digital space and the Internet of Things.

Contributors include David Adler, Neil Brenner, Bradley Garrett, Andrea Gibbons, Huw Lemmey, David Madden & Peter Marcuse, Andy Merrifield, Anna Minton, Don Mitchell, Rebecca Omonira-Oyekanmi, Nina Power, Dubravka Sekulić, Joe Shaw & Mark Graham, and Alex Vasudevan.

A People’s History of the World
From the Stone Age to the New Millennium
by Chris Harman

In this monumental book, Chris Harman achieves the impossible—a gripping history of the planet from the perspective of struggling peoples throughout the ages.

From the earliest human societies to the Holy Roman Empire, from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, from the Industrial Revolution to the end of the twentieth century, Chris Harman provides a brilliant and comprehensive history of the human race. Eschewing the standard accounts of “Great Men,” of dates and kings, Harman offers a groundbreaking counter-history, a breathtaking sweep across the centuries in the tradition of “history from below.” In a fiery narrative, he shows how ordinary men and women were involved in creating and changing society and how conflict between classes was often at the core of these developments. While many scholars see the victory of capitalism as now safely secured, Harman explains the rise and fall of societies and civilizations throughout the ages and demonstrates that history moves ever onward in every age. This magisterial study is essential reading for anyone interested in how society has changed and developed and the possibilities for further radical progress.

Part of my brain is hoping that after a very practical demonstration of how just-in-time supply lines fail, the public will be less on board with no deal.

And then I remember that nothing makes sense any more and politicians stopped giving a poo poo about accountability in the lead up to 2016.

I think about this way too much, and I'm guessing they wouldn't actually have to smelt anything for years and years - cleaning up and repurposing existing scrap would do them just fine - which is just as well because all of the easily-accessible ore is long, long loving gone.

They won't need to smelt for a while, but forging will be necessary; fortunately it's a relatively easy skill to keep in the knowledge base.

As long as we don't go back to a situation where there's a class of people doing the hard physical labour of doing the smelting and another class extracting profit from the sale of the goods they make. I'm all in favour of blacksmiths profiting off the sale of their own goods.
