Belgium now has the worst per-capita covid death rate in the world, worse than Spain’s.

Is there anything about Belgium’s response that’s made it worse than other European countries, or is it likely just a result of being a small, dense country?

in france it was hcq https://www.newsweek.com/hydroxychloroquine-coronavirus-france-heart-cardiac-1496810

mayo clinic also warned hcq can cause cardiac issues

quote:

Hydroxychloroquine, Mayo Clinic said, blocks one of the channels that controls the heart's electrical recharging systems. "This interference increases the possibility that the heart's rhythm could degenerate into dangerous erratic heart beats, resulting ultimately in sudden cardiac death."

its a matter of reporting, not actually deaths. people in china/italy/USA are just dying at home of "pneumonia" and not being counted

Yeah, from what I could figure yesterday, using data up to 2 weeks old, we're over double the pneumonia deaths expected by this time of year. That's excluding the covid-19 related ones.

The dumbest way this could end up would be idiots saying "What's the big deal? We noticed nobody was dying, ended the shutdown and still only 50k died. Geez stuff like pneumonia killed 20 times that in 2020, get a clue!"

Edit: even worse, maybe they find a way to blame the deaths on the shutdown. Like using extreme old person logic that all those people died of pneumonia because they didn't get enough fresh air because of quarantine.

You do realize that Trump didn't make up HCQ himself right? He just heard about it from other countries first. There is about 100 things that Trump has royally hosed up about this pandemic. Mentioning how he saw an article on daily mail or whatever about miracle drug being tested is really low on the list.

Its too early to tell if its going to be a great medicine for COVID-19. There seems to be a high level of cardiac risk when HCQ is combined with z-pac. But early studies from France and China have shown that HCQ greatly improves typical outcomes versus the control.

What was the control?

True.

quote:

Mr. Trump first expressed interest in hydroxychloroquine a few weeks ago, telling associates that Mr. Ellison, a billionaire and a founder of Oracle, had discussed it with him. At the time, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the host of television’s “The Doctor Oz Show,” was in touch with Mr. Trump’s advisers about expediting approval to use the drug for the coronavirus.

Mr. Giuliani has urged Mr. Trump to embrace the drug, based in part on the advice of Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, a self-described simple country doctor who has become a hit on conservative media after administering a cocktail of hydroxychloroquine, the antibiotic azithromycin and zinc sulfate.

False.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/15/health/new-french-study-hydroxychloroquine/index.html

quote:

In the French study, doctors looked back at medical records for 181 patients with Covid-19 who had pneumonia and required supplemental oxygen. About half had taken hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of being admitted to the hospital, and the other half had not. The doctors followed the patients and found there was no statistically significant difference in the death rates of the two groups, or their chances of being admitted to the intensive care unit. The study also raised important safety concerns about hydroxychloroquine. In the study, eight patients who took the drug developed abnormal heart rhythms and had to stop taking it.

https://scienceintegritydigest.com/2020/03/30/an-observational-study-without-a-control-group/#more-1164

quote:

The paper does tell us a bit about how sick the patients were at the start of the trial.

At enrollment, 92% of the patients had a “low” score in the National Early Warning Score (NEWS), suggesting they were not very sick.
The average time between onset of the COVID-19 symptoms and being enrolled in the study was 5 days. This suggests that the patients had already been sick for a while.
Only 15% of the enrolled patients had a fever. Fever is one of the characteristic symptoms of COVID-19, so people with a positive PCR but no fever are probably only mildly ill, or maybe already recovering.
Of the 12 patients who had a fever, the mean temperature was 38.6C (101.5 degrees F).
Only half of the enrolled patients had a lower respiratory tract infection.
15% of these patients required oxygen.
Four patients were asymptomatic.

In short, most of these participants were not patients fighting for their lives breathing through a ventilator in a hospital ICU bed. No, these were people who – at worst – were only mildly sick.

Exactly. Its way too early to tell if it will end up being a good treatment. But there is enough there to be worth doing trials.

HCQ is a real medicine which has some promise (potentially) for treatment. It is not a facebook fwd of "put onions in your socks to cure your flu" or "if i drink enough cold juices it will cure my pancreatic cancer fwd fwd stevejobs".

No one said it "shows no promise". Clinical trials initiated are still ongoing. Some have already finished and are being written up. Some have cancelled early (Brazil and Sweden studies notable here) due to concerns over side effects.

Post hoc analyses like the Mahevas pre-print I linked have indicated that there is no correlation of usage vs improved survival.

The only group that has claimed improved survival so far (Raoult) has been picked apart by multiple groups for nearly a month.

Ok so. There's been a lot of staticians recently looking at things and saying the corona isn't going away without a vaccine, so basically places like south korea, and maaybe china depending on how much they hosed with numbers are going to just go into full gently caress mode as soon as they disassemble any of their restrictions. So basically any place that lifts restrictions in the next two to three years is going to just be just as hosed as anywhere else because the virus isn't going away. It's kind of depressing, but I can't really see a fault in what they're proposing.
