WASHINGTON — The Navy is looking into whether it can reinstate Capt. Brett E. Crozier, who was removed from command of the carrier Theodore Roosevelt after he pleaded for more help fighting a novel coronavirus outbreak aboard his ship, Defense Department officials said on Wednesday.

Adm. Michael M. Gilday, the chief of naval operations, has indicated that he may reinstate Captain Crozier, who is viewed as a hero by his crew for putting their lives above his career, officials said.

“No final decisions have been made,” Cmdr. Nate Christensen, a spokesman for the admiral, said in a statement on Wednesday to The New York Times. Commander Christensen added that Admiral Gilday was reviewing the findings of a preliminary investigation into the events surrounding Captain Crozier’s removal.

Sounds right, the Dutch death stats for last week came out and it looks like there were 2000 deaths more than average, but the official death count was closer to 1000

While I also am disappointed by the Dutch government's response to the virus (I live in NL), it bugs me when people normalize these stats per population in this still early stage. When the virus is still in exponential growth, the size of the total population just doesn't affect growth at all. Deaths per million only becomes a relevant stat in hindsight.

I am also slightly surprised that I'm the only person pointing this out. Is there something obvious I'm missing?

Yeah I'm guessing that he blew the whistle on something that actually happened and the Navy secretary, Modly, called him stupid but a sailor died soon after. I think Modly is squirming right now.

But yeah, they're maybe going to try and get him to fix it and save face with the press and public. I'm not even sure Trump wanted him removed from the sounds of it

This is the same statistical shuck-and-jive that you can pull to make numbers seem more good / reassuring.

Perhaps the most egregious example of this that I'm familiar with is the World Bank changing its poverty elimination metric from an absolute number of people living under the poverty line, to a percentage of people living under the poverty line, because the latter can demonstrate progress even in cases where the latter would indicate losing ground to the problem.

well, in fairness, they're also mostly using log scale graphs, which eliminate this problem (since the plot of 'log(deaths)' and 'log(deaths/pop) = log(deaths) - log(pop)' only differ by 'log(pop)', which is a small constant)
