The ohio Flag is the only acceptable flag in THE midwestern republic of KIWIMOM. Pacific flag should have the bear on one side and a beaver on the other.

lmfao at any new country based in North America but the capital isn't New York, Montréal, or Austin. Especially lmfao at the one that picks the Ohio flag as the inspiration for theirs. Also, don't basques drink wine mixed with cola? I'm pretty sure that's a thing and I love it. Manischewitz + coke zero motherfuckers, the sabbath drink of champions.

All state flags are purposefully awful as a tactic to prevent them from being able to secede without any good symbol to rally around. Yes, especially California. No, that's Chile.

The map is based on Coronavirus pacts and the pact was actually started by Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana for reasons B and C with the rest of the Midwest asking to join soon after. E. Kentucky's membership gives the pact complete control over the majestic Ohio river allowing us to choke off Pittsburgh from the outside world and liberate it from the heathen Pennsylvanians as it was always rightfully ours.

The sea of ugly navy ones that just have indistinguishable seals on them are also atrocious. Personally I like Rhode Island's flag, in addition to some of the other good ones listed. Definitely gets points for originality: Often depicted without the gold fringe.

What's the story behind the extreme balkanization of central america? Some sort of Spanish colonial thing of just awful infrastructure in the inland hills?

The Napoleonic Wars gently caress poo poo up in Spain, everyone in the Spanish colonies takes the opportunity to get out fast. Imagine if Norman the Conqueror’s spiritual successor showed up in England circa 1770. Instead of the thirteen colonies having to JOIN, or DIE, they may gone their separate ways. That would be especially likely if they had weaker ties to each other, as was the case in Mesoamerica. The exceptions are Panama, which you may recall Uncle Sam broke from Colombia, and Belize, which had long been under British influence. I grew up in Pennsylvania and I think with a few small, common-sense changes, our flag could look way better than it currently does: 1. Change it from blue to bright red 2. Take out everything in the center and replace it with a large 5 pointed yellow star 3. Keep the eagle have him perched on the point of the star but make him look angrier 4. Reverse the black horses so they're leaning on the center star and make them kind of horse people 5. Have the horse person on the left be wielding that plow from the original flag in a port arms fashion 6. Have the horse person on the right wield our State Gun, which is the Kentucky Rifle, in the same fashion

Arglebargle III posted:What's the story behind the extreme balkanization of central america? Some sort of Spanish colonial thing of just awful infrastructure in the inland hills? Central America didn't declare its independence from Spain, it declared it from Mexico. Central America had a similar thing going on as pre-Civil War US where most Central Americans considered themselves citizens of their state first. Central America declared its independence together rather than individually because it expected Mexico with its much larger army would try to reconquer the territory and they needed to stick together. But that never happened, Mexico became mired in political instability regime change and infighting at the same time Central America declared its independence and never sought to reannex the country because it was too focused on its internal divisons. Without a powerful dangerous enemy to unite behind Central America had no reason to cooperate and stick together and dissolved along regional lines.

I've always been fascinated by that period of Latin American history as well, everything starting out hopeful and optimistic, the US constitution being copied verbatim, only for it to quickly devolve into chaos and instability in most countries. My favorite thing is Bolivia having a coup every few years, the latest one having occurred just last year. It's tough being Bolivia

I think the best thing George Washington did was not seek a third term. This established a tradition which at least prevented the USA from catching a case of president-for-life, which har hosed up so many other republics.

Luckily, most first heads of state for South American republics barely even managed to serve a full first term, firmly cementing the region as the bedrock of modern democracy.

When that flag was introduced, Georgia still flew the 1956 (aka, soon after Brown v. Board of Education) flag, shown below. There was no need in 2001 to "sneak" the Confederate flag in. And after the governor (Roy Barnes) lost relection for having been insufficiently racist and daring to change that flag, the next governor went right back to a Confederate-based flag, similar to another one you were saying was "snuck" in. ulmont fucked around with this message at 17:19 on Apr 18, 2020 |
