Ultraman does user xenophobia as a plot device tho. However a lot of the episodes are built around questioning and exploring it. The aliens all run the gamut from mafia to refugee to respected community member. Even monsters get pretty fair treatment by the bonkers little earth militias. And a lot of Kamen Rider's plot twists are built on the main guy being one of the "others" which is another exploration of xenophobia. But its roots are in antifascism so the messaging is usually "its not who you are but its what you do with your power." I can't really comment on sentai because I haven't watched as much as I have Ultra or KR stuff but I have noticed they tend to be the most xenophobic. Its usually On Sight when the foreign baddies show up even when they're just walking down the road or whatever. But sometimes the rangers are outsiders as well(however I don't think a non-japanese person has made ranger on a sentai cast?). Tho honestly, its way better to just get taken in by the special effects and all that sweet merch because that's the real draw to these shows. Any chance writers get to squeeze neat little messages in, that's cool. Overall, I'd say the social messaging in toku is very positive. Its all work together, play nice stuff. That's good stuff for kids. Messaging about gender and orientation has been a mixed bag. There lots of non-japanese people on toku casts but I don't think its proportional to the racial demographics of japan. thank for you reading my scattershot ramble through a vague media dissection of a very broad topic.

Abarangers ep 11 was pure absurdist comedy and had a black baseball player help fuel the plot to the point that he helped defeat the monster. It was pretty cool and he was presented as wacky but genuine. Speaking of moral messages in sentai some - no, most of them are dumb cliches but Goseiger got me in the emotions the other day with "Nothing you do is meaningless", or something to that effect. Red ranger was trying to teach a kid how to do a pullup and the kid thought he was dumb, but he didn't give up and the move was useful during the fight so the kid understood: even if something seems stupid, that doesn't mean it's useless. Cliche as hell but I needed to hear it.

I'm watching Zyuranger for the first time right now actually. Im at I think episode 32 and its been good so far. There's really fun myth and fairy tale themes for the monsters, the villains sing this great song every once in a while and their giant robot is a talking dinosaur god, who is kind of a dick sometimes.

He is shown shooting a cannon at the door to try to open it. Rita Repulsa sets up a magic fortress in tokyo, kidnaps two child astronauts, shrinks them, and sets up a ball suspended by a rope that will fall and kill them soon. She also rides a flying bike around tokyo and hams it up and honestly even if you don't go for wacky humor watch it for her, her acting is tremendous.

"Sentai villains are aliens and demons, so it's xenophobic" quite frankly sounds like a take he pulled out of his rear end to sound smart, and he left out recent Kamen Riders that had 'other' villains to make it.

Miss America in Battle Fever J was an American woman at first, but they replaced her actress when her inability to fluently speak the language made her unable to gel with the cast appropriately. Jiraiya/Ninja Black in Kakuranger was born and raised in America if I remember right. He speaks fluent English exclusively in the first few episodes of the series. Kyoryu Cyan technically counts, but he's not part of the main cast so whatever.

Jiraiya is Japanese-Chinese born in America in Los Angeles and his dad, the Japanese parent, was a martial artist who went into show business in the US. Kane Kosugi, the actor, also did SASUKE (which I should rewatch knowing who he is). He has some unfortunate roles after Kakuranger though. He was Ryu in the DOA movie as an example. There's even an ep with scenes set in LA with English speaking white actors and as this was when Power Rangers was climbing to its peak, I think that was definitely a case of the Sentai film crew taking some shots on location. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kane_Kosugi

It's also ignoring all of the times in the past that Kamen Rider has fought alien invaders. Great Leader himself has waffled on if he's human or alien across his ENTIRE existence. If you don't know the background lore on him, it seems to come overwhelmingly down on the 'He's an alien" thing, which means that all of the groups he's involved with are also alien Also I'd like these fucks to watch UltraSeven some time and see how it does and does not condemn the human loving race.

Caught up to Ep 31 of Zero One today. I'm still really enjoying it, out of the competition arc, the only real down point for me was the weird inconsistency of when Aruto was actually strong enough as Metal Hopper to beat Gai but I sort of chalked that up to the writers being different, and everyone sort of ignoring that, in plain view, that Gai was 100% for turning at least two HumaGears into monsters. Gai still feels like a discount Dan Kurato, but I suspect that if I didn't know that this had Ex-Aid's writer that I wouldn't be making the comparison. Fuwa continues to be the best, his upgrades have all been marvelous. I was happy to see that the show gave part of an explanation as to why Yua actually stayed with Gai instead of doing literally anything else and I really do hope that when she eventually breaks free that she also gets a cool upgrade. But low-key, I wouldn't be upset if her Raidriser form is incorporated into a new form somehow, I really like how the suit looks. Jin's new outfit is hilarious, the fact that the pinstripe is also on the flat colour side's lapel is great for reasons I can't explain. I am curious about what his endgame is going to end up being, I suspect that he is going to have to go up against Horobi at some point. Speaking of Horobi, I really hope his try hard, edge ninja samurai look never leaves. I really like that even though he still only has the one form, with no upgrades, that he is still portrayed as a goddamn beast when it comes to fighting. I am curious what the endgame for Izu is going to be, especially now that she has gone through Singularity. She probably won't, but I would be happy to see her being able to henshin and fight.

She's leaving Gai but don't fool yourself, she's going to be just as unimportant to the series afterwards.

The toy catalogues give previews by the month, so if Valkyrie got some last minute kitbash in July, we wouldn't know from TV-Kun. At this point, I wouldn’t mind a Grease Blizzard repeat. At least that was good looking for a kitbashed recolor and let the character go out on a high note.

The easiest way to differentiate them: toy catalog leaks will tell you the cliff's notes on the sounds coming from the toys and the price tag attached to them; tv-kun will tell you about the plot with actual photos of the show. E: also in fairness, if Valk got a last minute kitbash form we'd only know by TV-kun, because no way in hell that would get a proper toy

I can only think of ep31, but Gai had an actual strategy going on with some mooks shooting Aruto in the back. Some stuff I've been thinking off: - I want to see Momotaros possess Gai, only for his reactions to the Zaia copyright om the finishers and shilling of the transformation. - I really hope they give Fuwa either the Kagami from Kabuto treatment (sort of equal to the main rider despite difference in power) or the beast treatment. (Spoiled because someone was watching part of Wizard) Where beast single-handedly stops the sabbat. Because Fuwa is just really good. - I wonder if Gai has a chip in his head. Yua and Fuwa have it and it allows them to use the shot risers. 01 belt also has some weird tech part going on as shown in the first episode with the Zeia uplink. Jin and Horobi are already tech themselves. So what does Thouser have?
