put yourself in the shoes of the poster up there, you've just asked a mainlander tourist about a topic like that. is the response a. change of subject to european luxury goods or basketball b. lol I don't really care about politics, we don't worry about it c. we have to go through the phase of capital exploitation in order to properly implement communism ok he may have gotten lucky(?) and ended up with a party member who knew the exact right thing to say and might even believe it but my experience with talking to people from mainland china in real life and not youtube comment sections is that they're chill and don't go around spouting stuff like that like a red scare stereotype and privately admit it's all kinda silly after a few drinks. there are some kneejerk style responses to political topics but it's more in the whataboutist vein if they think you're genuinely trying to diss their country

China has the "those who can't do, teach" joke, but in the mainland version it ends "those who can't teach, teach university Marxism classes". It's the required class literally no one gives a gently caress about. In history class I asked students to define communism and the response was always some variation of "communism is getting rich", except from the real history nerd students who knew what Marxism was (but didn't believe in it either). That said parts do penetrate, I can't count how many times I had a student answer some question about causes with "fundamental contradictions" but none of them had any idea what that meant or what they meant by it, they just spit it out by rote.
