Not quite "for no reason" but certainly "for no good reason", Barts used to be a really useful short-cut between Cheapside and Farringdon for me and on more than one occasion I've taken a long-cut to the 24 hour McDonalds and the bus stop through the Royal London so I can take the inevitable "cold air has awoken my bladder" piss on the way home from the pub near work.

It's weird but thinking about the times I'd just casually walk though a hospital seems even further away than the rather grimmer and further-away times when I learned these short-cuts though them due to having a good reason for being there.

It seems that the hawks are leaking hard to the press to manufacture outrage that people can't get back to their boozy summer plans just because some olds and disableds who were going to die anyway will die. The confused messaging between the government line and the papers will eventually allow them to release the lockdown because that is what the people want. Exactly this. They're briefing that it won't be until christmas, so that when they release it (too) early they're once again doing what the people want. The Tories will get another bump in the polls (probably negating any issues when deaths pass x number) and Kier will do a face.

Well, hospitals are basically mini-cities of health, and can cover a vast area with multiple entrances and exits. It's kind of not surprising, presuming you can pass through fully one end and out the other. It doesn't happen that often, though.

The Royal London is loving *huge* - the main building is up in the top-right corner, but everything in that pink area is hospital buildings, including two pubs (although one's now a coffee shop because of course it is). It's basically a small town on its own - the student and nurses housing alone have a population of about 8k. It's pretty much impossible to have a night out in Whitechapel without technically walking "through" it, but like I say I'd deliberately divert to use the bogs in the main building for both convenience and the symbolism of going for a piss in the physical representation of New Labour pissing my money up the wall on massive PFI boondoggles.

It was also literally all fields when they built it:

40 acres of peaceful countryside almost a mile out of town, just the place for peaceful convalescence.

Should be able to pick one up at Amazon. like these.

this is the worst advice
the dragging cable just gets in the way and makes cutting your hair much more difficult than it needs to be. you just plug the battery one in to charge before you start cutting and never have to worry about it running out. it’s a non-issue. like out of one of those “there must be an easier way” infomercials.

Wahl’s a good brand though. you got that right. will last a lifetime.

I suppose in time that could happen with james cook, which is similarly gigantic and has its own train station, but it's situated just off a major road and we're not so built up yet that you would ever want to go through it, it doesn't connect on the other side.

In fairness a) it's not like they designed it that way, they actually made it a slightly less-convenient shortcut between Whitechapel and Wapping than the old building was and b) I had to go out of my way to pass through the main building.

The Barts shortcut is probably better-known just because of the weird laid-out-by-Saxon-desire-lines road layout of the City with the finest post-war urban planning making the western edge of the City one of the most confusing places on Earth to navigate as a pedestrian so everyone who lives/works around there has a cabby level of knowledge of every weird little side-street, alleyway and church yard so they don't have to go 15 minutes out of their way just to get to the good cafes around Smithfield.

Teachers and kids are still working since the shutdown. So to shift the summer holidays, you'd need to stretch the academic year out longer than the 40weeks agreed in regulations, union agreements, employment contracts etc...

Further complications include the sneaky some schools are pulling - employing teachers until term ends July then rehiring for Sept starts.

Not exactly immutable but it's going to be a huge effort behind the scenes to attempt.

But if there ever was an opportunity to start freash and refit the academic year into a better timeframe of more breaks and shorter summer holidays, the 2020/21 year is it

A lot of people in the pub industry are worried that this is going to wipe out free houses. The concern is that they don't have the reserves or support to survive this, and the large pubcos with the cash reserves or credit facilities to do so are going to rush in and buy the lot at firesale prices.
