I don't really understand why the Mimic Beacon is different from the Shadow Device in terms of being a Panic button for getting out of a hot situation other than the latter requires you to bunch up to do it while the former shuts off after ~3 or less attacks against it (the stats you gave are wrong in the video).

The Mimic Beacon is super nerfed in WotC, it is totally fair now. Back when it had cover bonuses it was disgusting.

I had no idea Purifiers even had incendiary grenades. Whenever I let one of them live long enough to attack, they've always chosen the flamethrower option.

I'm a fan of the mimic beacon. I only use it when I think it's absolutely necessary, or when I get a bad activation. Like this one (click for big, SPOILER WARNING):

So that's three pods of dickheads spawning in the objective room. None of them had left in the time it took my squad to walk across the map completely concealed. Fortunately, my Spark had one of the less good heavy weapons Shredder Gun and that helped out a lot. I don't remember if I used my mimic beacon. I probably did.

All in all, I think the devs did a pretty good job in terms of balance. Some of the sitreps are bullshit, the Lost are terrible, the Assassin is hateful in the early game. Yet almost everything you can recruit or build has a use and almost everything has a counter.

Still, you're doing fine, FairGame. You've just got to get the ol' deathball rolling!

The shadow device is also bullshit tbh, but so is Long War. And you have to PLAN to use the shadow device with bunching up, whereas the mimic beacon can just be tossed as an "oh poo poo" flag. I'm glad it apparently got nerfed in WotC; that's news to me so I'm glad y'all told me. Still not using it, but I understand the pushback now!

It seems like you really should be using the mimic beacon. Especially if it draws out flame grenades which at this point of the game when it's usually an advent guaranteed death and will probably continue to be for the rest of the game for anyone that isn't fireproof.

AFAICT ever since the nerf it just forces enemy AI to use only basic attack, which always hits, and unless damage rolls extremely high or low the hologram can generally survive the first attack but never the third.

Ugh, I seem to have lost a couple videos. I hope that's all I've lost or I may have to start over.

e: going to check and see what I lost. I had a hardlock today, and all the videos TODAY aren't there (but there are only 2 of them and I can summarize when necessary.) If it wasn't a function of the hard-lock, then...we're starting over.

It's going to pay off eventually--I'm sure of it.

Any day now.

The saddest thing about that fire grenade is that if it just weren't Siberia TravelLog would have lived. The game actually does make you immune to Burning status if you're standing in water, like a river or fountain. You think your starting zone doesn't matter, and then something like this happens...

It's just 1.5 missions. Though a VERY important character dies offscreen in one one of them.

edit: hrm, I still have the savefile from before the two missions in question. I'm going to continue rolling with the character death, but I guess I can replay those mission in an "alternate universe" sort of thing like I did with the XCOM Base Defense in my Long War LP.

It's a flat 50/50 chance iirc, 100% with explosives.

Chosen get 3 actions per turn, but no Ruler Reaction (I'll explain what Ruler Reaction means when we meet a Ruler. It'll be a while because I'm intentionally not bothering with them. I hate them.)

Some of their stuff is a free action, though. And also the PS4 lags so much when they're doing stuff it's difficult for me to tell what's happening in what turn order.

The Assassin gets a skill kind of like the Templar's Momentum, where she gets a bonus move after attacking in melee. And her move radius is absurd and she can jump to any height. So it's not uncommon to watch her come out of nowhere, from across the map, cut a dude down, and then scramble for cover nowhere remotely close to where you are.

As the campaign continues, the Chosen level up and they get more abilities. Mostly these abilities are less harmful than their initial abilities. The Assassin in this campaign can summon ADVENT soldiers. But like...ADVENT soldiers are pretty easy to kill, and I'd much rather she waste a turn doing that than doing damage to my troops, or knocking them unconscious, or whatever.

Letting the Lost and Advent battle it out is always useful. Works even better with a Reaper and Remote Start, so you can weaken the Advent and summon more Lost to chew on their forces.
Oh, and I have seen large Lost swarms murder Chosen before. It is hilarious.

It can work against you sometimes. One time when playing (without integrated-DLC option) I had a mission where I finished the primary objectives and cleaned up all the advent I could find, and Lost swarms stopped spawning, but the mission still refused to end. It took an inordinately long time to search every building and eventually I found out that the problem was a literal corner case of bad mechanical interactions: the Archon King had patrolled down a very obscure alleyway and got trapped between a dumpster, the edge of the map, and a Lost clowncar. Presumably that's where they had been for the past ~45min while I searched, just maliciously loitering at one another like the world's laziest mosh pit

Luckily it was a Reaper who spotted them, so I got a chance to set up a nice grenade+overwatch ambush through a wall, which partly made up for the fact the squad was really not set up to deal with the most bullshit enemy.

Nah, thread only. I have played ahead in the campaign, went back to review videos after a crash (there are a lot of crashes! It’s not remotely stable!) and saw most of two missions were missing. Seems to be the extent of it though.

Honestly neither mission is terribly important and other than dates being wrong I doubt anyone would notice but for the conspicuous absence of a soldier. I don’t like doing the “Aunt Rachel, Cousin Richie, and Grandma from Family Matters” treatment so I’ll be upfront about it when it happens.

I've once seen a Psi Zombie 1-shot a 4 HP rookie, but they are so easy to avoid I don't even know if they can crit. If they can, I could see that hurting quite a lot indeed.

The Lost appearing in every other mission might get old quickly, but their animation for jumping down from a roof never does.
