I hate* to be the "did you know John Lennon beat his wife" guy, but 99% of animal rescue videos like this are contrived by actually putting animals in danger first so that the "rescue" can be filmed. Maybe not this time though since that puppy is dumb as gently caress. * let's be real, I don't hate it

Someone who has played in a band/orchestra, is the conductor even necessary? Don't people have their music and timing and poo poo pretty well memorised anyway? They've always seemed like a silly, slightly anachronistic tradition to me but that might just be because I've never played in a band.

If you think it's easy to keep time, have you and 4 other friends count to 50 quietly by yourself, not moving, looking at a time piece or making any other signal that you're keeping time. When you hit 50 you raise your hand. See how many people raise their hand at the same time.

Additionally, the conductor is usually the one responsible for the overall musical vision for the performance. No two performances of the same piece are ever quite the same, even with the same conductor and the same group, but there are definitely wider variations between different conductors.

Usually, the conductor isn't as animated during rehearsal as they are during the performance.

Android Apocalypse posted:I've played in an orchestra. The conductor helps visually keep time for the musicians, which can be important if there are time changes in the music. They can help a section get ready for their big part with those exaggerated movements like a "get ready... to... PLAYLOUDNOW!" Speaking of which, conductors can help regulate volume between sections. For example, if the brass section is blaring too loudly in one part when the flutes are supposed to take center stage, the conductor can be a reminder to play quieter. This is a very good description of it.
