Kinda sucks that there are no robbit or MEC agents in Chimera, or they didn't use it as an opportunity to sneak back in Celatids or something as fan service and have it be voiced by Norm McDonald.

I'm actually really excited for this game. It seems like a nice side project they did to have fun (key word there is seems). If it is great, I hope it too comes to the Switch. Been itching for a good XCOM like on the Switch.

Hard West was OK. Not great but it gave me a good amount of hours of fun. I got it on sale for like $2, so for that price it was worth it.

Yeah agreed, not having to go through endless medicore UFO maps that only have aisles for cover is like my favourite improvement about 2 (and I like lots of things about 2 more than 1 so that's pretty good!).

I think those are just the irises of the eye. Imagine the big anime eyes instead have armoured bits on them.

This might just be the year
I finished XCom 2 for the first time a couple weeks back and I just came back and beat WOTC today. I gotta say, on the same difficulty, WOTC was easier, but the gameplay was more varied and the different missions and enemies you faced was fun. What breaks the game in the later game is that the weapons you get from beating the Chosen are absolutely insane. The Chosen Sniper Rifle lets you move and attack, it gives you 3 auto reloads and is just all around insane.

I beat the final level without sustaining a single hit. I killed two of the Avatars from overwatch traps. That felt cathartic after how insanely difficult beating them on Vanilla was. Great timing for Chimera's release!

gods, but I miss the way you equipped soldiers in X-COM, especially compared to how nightmarishly clunky XCOM 2 is about it. Did you make a new rifle? Sweet! Go find one specific soldier and click into their loadout, then on the weapon, and equip it.

Meanwhile X-COM: did you get a new gun? Sweet, go to the skyranger and toss it in the loadout with everything else. When your soldiers deploy into a mission, drop it onto someone and go. There's no chance to forget to equip it provided you toss it into the communal pool, and even if you DO forget, your soldiers can literally go and get it from the skyranger.

This also extends to how annoying it is to get, say, 5 of the new gun. Build each one individually, equip them individually. Meanwhile X-COM: buy 1 gun? Why not buy 5? Throw them all in the skyranger! Everyone gets a new gun!

Yeah, are you using some weird Long War variant or something? The closest I can think of are the Alien Hunters weapons, but you're not exactly supposed to be decking your whole squad out in Shadowkeepers or w/e.

I think you're thinking of EU/EW here, which is why XCOM 2 switched to squad level upgrades.

Anyway the tech support all specialists and sparks run ran into an unforeseen snag: I have enough medics to keep everyone alive on the battlefield pretty much indefinitely. You'd think that'd be a good thing, but they take so many hits that every time the survivors come home they ping up as 1hp gravely wounded and have sustained enough poo poo that collectively they're terrified of EVERYTHING. I've got 12 specialists right now on 7 - 30 day recuperation, Mox and a bunch of rookies are going to have to carry the weight and oh great sectopods just showed up.

I think something messed up when I transferred it between computers. I uninstalled everything and they worked after.

I mean, I'd imagine they're doing it to see how things are received before considering implementing them in XCOM 3 as opposed to fun. :v:

I'll be honest I find frog man muton to be way more unsettling than the original design. There's some uncanny valley poo poo going on where it looks kind of like a human but is obviously very much not one

Also I find that kind of design cowardly. Good writing can make you connect and emote with stuff no matter how alien it looks. Changing stuff to look more human is just a cheap shortcut.

I mean the thing about having to go into a soldier's specific screen to individually equip them with a weapon in contrast to X-COM's "yeah have the Skyranger's equipment pool, equip people as you quickly tab through" was absolutely a thing about EU/EW, especially with Long War installed that added even more stuff to be concerned about when equipping a unit.

Like it is 100% the reason XCOM 2 went with squad level upgrades because it helped cut down on stuff you needed to care about equipping on an individual basis to ensure effective combat effectiveness without needing to overhaul the general UI design.

Summary posted:

  • They wanted to see how interleaved turns worked in XCOM and how players would react to the different tactical challenges.
  • They want to see how people react to set characters
  • Set after Successful XCOM 2 campagin (secretly being an Advent victory game it isn't)
  • The humans, hybrids, and aliens are all referred to as victims. City 31 is a chance at co-existence but the peace is fragile, and underground threats are driving the city to chaos.
  • It's canon
  • Non death isn't done since XCOM 1 and 2 are more wars of attrition compared to Chimera
  • You can still lose on a strategic level.
  • Possibly hardcore mode with perma death?
  • First playthrough players only have Godmother, Terminal, Cherub, and Verge at the beginning. More are unlocked later. Replays have all characters you've unlocked.
  • More opportunities to hear combat chatter and see how agents interact with each other.
  • Short announcement to release schedule is because it is neither sequel nor expansion. It is not meant to have people wait too long and is also hoping to attract new players.
