audacity is very good, and i am a big fan of screen to gif for recording short videos on one's turned-on monitor. bit of a pain that you have to hook it up to an mp4 encoder yourself, but it's useful for making funny gifs.

I use GifCam, it's a really lightweight and simple program with pretty good editing and optimizing abilities, only real weak point is that it sucks at putting text on top of GIFs.

Use Audacity to make your podcast, the noise reduction feature alone is the difference between hearing a voice and hearing a guy talking with his air conditioner running in the background.

Yeah Plex is incredible for letting you watch video files on your TV over your home network. No more thumb drives or laptops plugged into the HDMI jack.

That is true, but I am also reflecting on how few people I know would even understand what these programs do, And then I get to feel good about being good at computer, even though I am only modestly good at computer

I have no idea what I'm doing.
I really like xnviewmp it's a image viewing software that's cross compatible with osx/windows (something I sadly need). It's able to very easily load tons of photos. I also use pureref it's free (you just have to set the price to 0) and is the only app I found that lets you just place a ton of images on a board.

If anyone knows any image viewer alternatives (I'm open to even shell commands lol) let me know.

I'll pitch in with JMP, the tool I've installed on every one of my work computers on day one of the job. Fantastic data manipulation and stats program with a learning curve, but it's so worth it.

Also, GUI-based! You don't have to learn arcane incantations like you do with R. Or download obscure packages like with R. Or try to interpret unhelpful help files like with R.

In conclusion, gently caress R.

I really like Gyazo for screenshots, just draw a box and it uploads it to a website opens it in yr browser and you can link it to people.

Also its not very obscure i dont think but KeePass for storing your passwords so you dont lock yrself out of stuff or have a dodgy .txt on your desktop, its not the fanciest solution for this out there but its free and ive used it for years.

Oh i also use the Vivaldi browser, its fine, its basically just chrome with a few goofy extra features you'll either like or never use, i really like their side bar that you can store a website in, it works so well thanks to every site having a mobile version these days and working well in a very compressed area

I recently discovered SuperF4 which is something I've been missing my entire life. It makes Alt-F4 do what it's supposed to do and close the dang program. No longer do I have to futz around if a game crashes in full screen mode trying to get the task manager up, I can just hit Ctrl-Alt-F4 and it ends the process immediately.

A billion years ago (like Windows 3.1 and Windows95 days) there was a simple image editing utility called LView Pro. I can't remember where I got it, and I think I was using a free version of it. But eventually it wouldn't run on newer Windows OSs and I still miss it. I'm sure modern image editing programs can let you do so much more, but that's the problem--I haven't ever found a free basic editor that wasn't a PITA to learn and use.
