How much force projection does the PRC have anyway? Like, if the US government just vanished in a puff of smoke, how far could China then push?

Pretty little at this very moment, but they've got ~4 full aircraft carriers coming online/in trials/being built (and some other amphibious assault carriers I guess when they're not catching on fire) and are literally building a man-made island and airstrips in the South China Sea to gently caress with people, so it's kind of a matter of time. It's all really up in the air as to just how much of a paper tiger the Chinese army is though. For example they supposedly still can't manufacture their own engines for their top class fighters and need the Russians to do it for them, they have a large army but there's indications their training is garbage and corruption wastes tons of funds that theoretically should go into improving their readiness, etc. It's entirely possible that corruption and poor leadership and training runs deep enough that if they were to get into a meaningful conflict they'd find themselves getting severely hammered, but nobody wants to take that risk.

Why do you think that China would just immediately start a war if the US disappeared? There are much cheaper ways of getting what you want out of foreign countries.

the U.S. has been focused so much on fighting guerrillas for the past 20+ years that the "conventional" side of the house has degraded pretty badly, at least according to what these generals say in their congressional testimonies. now, you can (and should) interpret that as them begging for more money, but they'll also say things that are pretty revealing, like how there are no artillery officers in the army from the rank of major on down who have ever seen an entire artillery battalion fire their guns all at once. they train to fire one or two shells and call it a day because that is as much artillery as they'd use on any given day in afghanistan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDNIVHmQork&t=18s

that said i think there is a lot of skepticism about china's military since it's perceived as a "parade army." a lot of show but the training exercises are not very good or not realistic. maybe that's changing though

neoliberal rot is actually quietly dismantling the usa's own military capabilities. like we're functionally down to 11 carriers from 12 because of a bunch of stupid attempts to "modernize" at the behest of parasitic private contractors

freeasinbeer posted:it’s landing forces Eh, I don't think the PRC is blowing trillions on them even I don't think a Normandy style landing on Taiwan is going to happen in the future. As far as China's military, the PLA's ground force is arguably the step-child at this point. That said, PLA troops have been stopped in Syria and taking part in Russian-led exercises, and it seems their latest equipment is fairly decent. The PLAN in contrast though has been seen an massive expansion, and it has scuttled most of its pre-1990s force. The fact that China has 2 carriers already commissioned and has another 2 under construction is saying something. In the near future, Chinese will have the technology, shipyards, and capital for parallel production. Their airforce has come a long, but they are still hamstrung by needing Russian-designed engines and the delay of the T-50's engine was a setback. That said, they would be going against F-35s...so I don't know if they are sweating it. Ardennes has issued a correction as of 23:55 on Apr 24, 2020 |

The Chinese primarily need them to push back the USN from the Western Pacific. The Chinese/Russians have also invested in anti-ship missiles obviously.
