Yes. XPiratez is still the primary openxcom mod for one who wants to work incredibly hard for their softcore porn

Truthfully, XPiratez is one of the few mods for original X-COM that I've thought about trying, though I've heard that it's pretty difficult. Plus, I've never played the original X-COM as it is, so it'd probably be best if I played through the vanilla game before I tackle any mods.

XPiratez is a mod of OpenXCOM. If you're gonna play any version of og xcom, play that, not xpiratez.

Think I've talked about it in this threat before but overall it is not great. Haven't checked in a while but the basics are that the author loves making poo poo tons of useless and redundant gear if for no other reason then to put more titty pics in the game, the piratey theme might as well not exist, and the author absolutely loves overly complicated mechanics, especially for damage.

In short just play OpenXCOM

When X-Piratez first showed up on RPS it had the pirate theme front and center. Your starting crew was packing a flintlock knockoff of the original XCOM loadout. One actual machine gun for the autocannon and actual cannons standing in for the cannons, etc. Most of your funding came from capturing enemy units, ranging from soldiers to practically unarmed tourists, and ransoming them off. A bunch of weird stuff just for the sake of stuff, and terrible slavery mechanics, but some fun.

Unfortunately the mod has since implemented a new start scenario. You start in a glorified prison van, with barely armed prisoners. Nothing but hand to hand weapons, hunting scorpions or whatnot. The idea of a branching playthrough based on how you do your initial research is interesting, but the execution is impossible.

X-Piratez is like peak "modding community" because it is this huge comprehensive total conversion that changes the whole way the game works, and then also loads it with tons of softcore porn for no reason.

There's really no justifiable reason to play the pirate tiddies mod when the X-Files and Warham 40k mods exist.

X-Com Files: https://openxcom.mod.io/the-x-com-files

You literally start with Mulder and Scully driving around in a car checking out monster incidents. There is an amazing amount of content in this mod, there's cults and ghosts and god knows what, and you slowly ramp up to XCOM levels of operation as the various threats get more intense. Vampires and crazy robot building scientists and the aliens will also eventually turn up, you have to be prepared to be in for the long haul for this one, there is just so much. Some of the map design is bad though, you'll probably want to use some of the Open X-Com options to tune things to be a bit more reasonable.

40k: https://openxcom.mod.io/40k

This is a barrel of fun, the X-Com engine works really well for Imperial Guard and Space Marine shenanigans. A ton of weapons and devices from the 40k universe are recreated here, you even get to run over chaos cultists with a dumb motorbike with cannons on it. The mod steals the great voice lines from the Dawn of War games, so you get to hear exactly how much your troops love the Emperor as they're raining bolter fire on Slaanesh fuckers. It's just a good time, purging a disturbingly earth-like planet from chaos filth.

There is a contingent of people out there determined to turn everything they play into softcore titillation at all times. You can at least sort of understand it in, say, a TES game, where the depth of options available to you lets you set up custom bodysliders and then consult a ten page manual of key combinations to arrange literally any sex scene you like with your lizardman who hangs dong or whatever. It's a bit more abstruse (and funny) when it's, say, SS13, where you've essentially just committed to a worse sexting experience because you get sprites to mechanically represent things, alongside the threat of a clown robusting you at any time. It's just loving wildly hilarious when its poo poo like 'here's this dos strategy game with a charmingly rear end-ugly art style, let's throw some motherfucking tits on this motherfucking earth defense force'. Ditto for poo poo like Crusader Kings or Mount and Blade. Historical violence simulator? Better shove my weird fetish into this!

This is also pretty amusing, yeah. I feel like a lot of game devs have just sort of accepted that this will always be some portion of their fan base, because, you know, people.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I do remember asking about OpenXCOM and XPiratez about a year or so back, and I remember something along those lines. I do remember a recommendation to try and earlier version of the mod to avoid the super-difficult start scenario.

I dunno; I thought if anything, you could plugin cheats (assuming OpenXCOM allows for cheats, which I think it does) and at least that way, you could get more of a foothold and see what the game has to offer.

The funniest part of this whole derail is that XCom: Chimera Squad just came out, and it establishes as canon that humans, aliens, and hybrids now live in an uneasy state of relative peace. Also, the tutorial mission basically takes the guy on the left here, copies him several times, and uses him as a pack of dumbshit terrorists who are mad that XCom didn't genocide all the non-humans at the end of the war. What's more, Chimera Squad can straight up recruit a Viper, and she has a special intro scene with your (human, male) intelligence officer that strongly exudes "acrimonious breakup" vibes.

I guess the snakefuckers got their way, in the end. :v:

New meaning to "show some skin".

Yeah the aspects of "oh poo poo we now need to live together" are really fun, even if sometimes cringy. And what's more, despite the vast differences, the solutions deployed to remedy the situation are very Human. Mutons are agressive and can't control themselves? Assign them cats so they can learn to control their temper. It's all very light hearted despite there being a murder via plasma bomb explosion in the tutorial.

So far the mods have been pretty standard (the game has full Workshop support) but I expect some crazy stuff to pop up this week at the least. Modders are quarrantined as well, after all.
