AMERIGOONS, ALL THIS CAN BE YOURS! (Not legal tender. This image and post are not endorsed by the IRS.) If you are an American goon who hasn't already received your almighty Pee Boy Pandemic Dollaz, you should check your status and make sure there's nothing you need to do on the IRS site: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments Follow the instructions on this site to check the status of your payment, or give the IRS your up-to-date direct payment info. You will have to read some instructions, but hey, it's literally money the government is supposed to be paying you. If you've filed taxes in the last couple years and you have not been giving the IRS deposit info, do it. It's the difference between getting your money now and getting your money in the form of a check with Trump's name on it in like a couple months. The IRS is doing a crappy job of informing the public about this, so do your part and tell your friends/family to check the official site at IRS.gov. If you know someone for whom money's tight, make sure they have visited the site and checked into things. That $1200 may be a joke, but for some people, it's food or rent money. What you should do if things aren't working on the site: Got some sort of error message? Told your info isn't in the system? Two things to try: 1. Check back daily. The payments and site data are set up to issue updates every 24 hours at around midnight EST. My understanding is the people involved are actively trying to fill in the gaps, get payments out, and patch bugs in the Get My Payment lookup tool. 2. If you filed returns in both 2018 and 2019 and the site isn't accepting your 2019 information, try your 2018 return information. Some people are reporting their more recent return isn't in the system, but their 2018 information works. 3. If the system isn't recognizing your information, try alternative info to correct for formatting errors. A goon has reported that they finally got their status to open up by basically entering their address as "123 Main", instead of "123 Main Dr.",as it appeared on their tax return. Bear in mind that the IRS is going to be handling all this with a combination of people manually inputting return information and a core database built on assembly code from the mid 60s. Many of you have already gotten your money. Great. However, there's an additional, very little publicized deadline that's way more critical for a small number of goons: If you meet a, b and c below, you will get screwed out of 500$ per dependent child unless you go to the IRS website and fill in some info. a) You were getting Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits (SSDI), Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or were a Veteran Affairs beneficiary b) You didn't file a tax return in the last two years c) You have child dependents The initial deadline has passed, but some groups can still put their information in. If you don't do it, you won't get the money until 2021. Full information here: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/ssa-rr...e-plus-500-push Place to enter the information here (read the instructions carefully): https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here Note: I know some people aren't getting clear responses about their status from the site; sorry, I can't troubleshoot it for you. The info I have is basically limited to what's on the IRS site and what other goons are saying: I'd just be reading it back to you. Check the other parts of the site, and keep trying. Beware of potential scammers on sites that aren't IRS.gov. Discendo Vox fucked around with this message at 04:55 on Apr 26, 2020 |

Can we use this as a general unemployment thread? I got my trump bucks and I got most of the expanded unemployment money (still waiting on last week's claim, but I got two weeks of back pay yesterday). I'm getting more money per week than when I worked full time last year. I'm also not terribly burdened with bills, so quite a bit is going to go to savings. I'm actually going to have savings!

Haven't gotten anything, and I'm pretty sure I'm above the maximum income limit for getting a stimulus check. I'll be fine without it.

Stuck in the eternal limbo state despite filing every year. Probably because I'm horribly in debt and still owe the IRS a good deal. Same with state unemployment, but I'm self-employed in the south, so that's not a surprise. I don't personally expect to see a red cent from either program at this point, but maybe that's just my pessimism. Even just discounting what I currently owe the IRS by that amount would be a lot, though. Edit: It is unwise to post mere minutes after waking up. Now if you want to turn around and pay them with their own money more power to you, it's yours to spend.

It would loving figure that the business loans flow like floodwaters, but they slow-roll the actual relief program. (I suspect this is an indirect consequence of cutting operational funding to the bone and then expecting the IRS to handle giving out money piecemeal to each person individually while still probably requiring them to vet every claim, but what do I know)

Even setting aside the IRS being sabotaged several different ways, business relief is much more straightforward mechanically (in terms of getting money out) than individual taxpayer relief.

Yeah I don't envy the gruntwork that goes into actually locating individual humans and doing poo poo for them on this kind of scale. Been kinda impressed with them, given that constraint -- although I am still waiting for my check as well as my 2019 refund.

I was just approved for PUA because I was an independent contractor in Q1-Q4 last year. I uploaded all my paystubs and still didn't qualify for more than the base $160 payments, but if you're trying to get PUA in MI, I know the ropes. I finally just certified for 4 weeks and I should be getting my back pay next week.. my friend who is a tattoo artist had his benefits denied because even though he was laid off (because obviously the tattoo shops are closed) the shop didn't want to alter their taxes or do them properly so they tried to say that he quit when he didn't, and I've heard multiple accounts of things like that. Now that the pua is available I told him to apply for that. Thankfully, the NC DES finally opened applications today. I know a little bit about the North Carolina application, although I was denied I only got approved through Michigan because that's where I've done most of my work and the last year, but if anyone needs help in Michigan or North Carolina let me know and I will do as much as I can.

They know how much you make, and if it's a one-time issue that would be really difficult to pay back, they can be surprisingly generous in what they're willing to forgive. I knew someone who had a high-four-figure tax debt after he took a 1099 job (without anybody explaining to him what that meant for taxes) - after a few rounds of paperwork they let him pay about 15% and forgave the rest with a stern bureaucratic warning that if he did it again they'd gently caress him up. There are shady companies that advertise on late night TV that they'll handle the paperwork for you, but they just take money for doing things you can do yourself. The IRS has more information here: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-explains-how-offer-in-compromise-works

I got the check in the mail. But I'm on SSDI, so I'm thinking I'm gonna wait until the first to see if I also get a direct deposit payment. What should I do if I'm paid twice, just write VOID on the check in big letters and mail it back to the Treasury with an note explaining what happened?

I've updated the OP with some info on what to do if your information is being rejected from the "Get My Payment" tool. Please bear in mind that this is not official IRS advice, it's just my understanding from talking to other people on the forums. If the site says to do something different, do that instead.

I got to a funny thing where I had to state whether I owed or recieved 2019 taxes. I didn't. Putting in recieved $0 or owed $0 caused some kind of bullshit error. Eventually I was able to enter my 2018 taxes, where I owed $3 and it worked. (I was then able to put in my bank info.)
|
# ? Apr 26, 2020 05:10 |

Yeah I've heard about the zero owed or refunded bug- not sure what to advise people. I'm nervous about telling people to enter the 2018 info, honestly, because a) the system may not want you to do it and b) it might change how much you receive, even potentially giving you an amount that would require future "correction". That's a total guess on my part though, I can't interact with the tool myself.

So on the "get my payment" IRS site, my page was updated with a payment date for next week. So I guess if you are at the point where it says something about not having a payment date set, just keep checking on it. I think it was about a week and a half from submitting my bank info to getting a set date in my case.

What ended up working for me was fixing the way they wanted my address entered. Instead of 1234 Chicken Coop Dr. (as was written on my tax form) they wanted 1234 Chicken Coop. Nothing on their website helped me figure this out, a post in the Trump lol thread is what did it. I hope this helps some of you, because I finally was able to enter my bank account information and might actually get my money in a reasonable amount of time.

I've been unemployed for several years and I'm listed as a dependent on my parents taxes. I've been filing taxes just in case, because I don't want the IRS to come knocking when somebody finally hires me and accuse me of gently caress knows what during my joblessness. That website says they can't determine my eligibility. I probably not getting a dime, right?
|
# ? Apr 26, 2020 23:37 |

I think if you're someone else's dependent, you don't get money, but they may be eligible for an additional amount.
|
# ? Apr 26, 2020 23:39 |

If someone else has declared you as a dependent, you are not eligible for the payment; I don't know if there's any other recourse or alternative payment available. Slight good news, in a round-about way; if you're being declared as a dependent, you are required to file taxes. There's some set of conditions I'm not qualified to advise people on where you don't have to file, but in spite of the common conception of everyone I've ever talked to about it and myself before having reason to look it up last year, adult dependents are actually required to file, apparently. So you're properly on top of that, at least.

Intentional fuckery from on high, probably. Keep in mind, the US system where the IRS (usually) knows what you make and owe but also expects you to figure that out on your own and tell them is uhhhhh an uncommon combination. From what I understand their service budget was reduced and their enforcement budget has been slashed to the bone. Guess what class of tax filer that tends to benefit most
