Uncharted 4 had almost inexplicably lazy writing. They gave them so much build up just to not meaningfully address any of the conflicts between the characters. I mean, they do address it but in really quick and lazy ways.

Some of its writing is just as dumb and hamfisted as Naughty Dog's but it still manages to be really impactful because it's not relentlessly one-note. "Before you I was like any other Cliff" is both dumb as hell and genuinely a great moment, and you didn't have to plod through hours of brutality to get there.

CharlestonJew posted:do the leaks say anything about the game being filled with torture porn because that one scene from the reveal where the cult lady broke that girl's arm went on waaaaayyyyyyy too long and was really offputting Yeah this turned me off naughty dog forever, honestly. Just a hyper-realistic 4-minute cutscene of a woman being tortured; literally zero gameplay. Why play games at all at that point? Just watch a movie. It's OK to have lots of exposition... Red Dead 2 had tons and tons of exposition... but at least when promoting rdr2, they spent tons of time detailing how it was essentially a cowboy simulator. They didn't just show a cutscene of a guy getting scalped and then expect you to buy the game

Everything I had seen before this made TLoU2 look to be relentlessly cynical, wallowing in misery to prove It Should Be Taken Seriously, so I am not really surprised by any of the leaks. It is the product of jaundiced minds

this all sounds like extreme misery porn. God Of War addressed themes of revenge and redemption so much better and what's more it was actually fun to loving play. The sequel in general is a poo poo idea though because it really lessens the impact of the first game's ending and if these spoilers are true, it makes that even worse

I'm looking forward to Troy Baker's playthrough on his youtube channel so he can talk about how amazing and powerful the scene is where he gets beat to death with a golf club, also how amazing and powerful every other cutscene in the game is. Less misery simulators and more strand games.

Given that an armed militia was about to cut open his surrogate daughter's brain, and they weren't going to stop if he asked nicely. Seems like violence is justified from his position there.

Like I don't think the kind of story they want to tell, in general, is completely off limits. The issue is that Funny Games is focused and less than two hours, it's not something that's 20 hours of combat arenas with sick execution animations interspersed with box-pushing puzzles

This is the model they used for the new character. But like, Neil when someone says they want their head crushed between a toned pair of thighs they don't mean it literally. Like they don't actually mean they want their melon exploded and hopes someone videotaped the whole thing and put it up somewhere on the net Neil.

CharlieFoxtrot posted:Like I don't think the kind of story they want to tell, in general, is completely off limits. As I mentioned earlier you definitely can make a long game out of it as well. LISA is an intensely cynical and mean-spirited game but it's also really funny so it's not an entirely miserable experience. And it manages to pull off multiple really brutal moments by having them permanently effect the game play as well. I guess it ultimately comes down to whether TLOU2 is a humorless misery simulator or if it has a bit more going on with the story but from everything they've showed it seem like it will be the former.
