Since there are not really zombies concerning people in this one is the world recovered to some extent? I don't mean back to sanity since there are mad cults or whatever, but are people far more organised than say the starting town of TLOU1 which was pretty good as far as living in the apocalypse goes. That gym does look pretty fancy but I thought all the previews showed Ellie at a nice prom type deal or a dance. It seems like the only truly lovely places are in between settlements, while the settlements themselves are pretty well set up with power and amenities.

Dewgy posted:This was absolutely a decision informed by years of other developers trying to do it in other ways. Having the NPC followers be invisible is one of the best possible ways to handle an uncontrollable AI partner, and if there’s one thing the decade before TLOU taught us it’s that escort missions completely suck. I do think the intro was pretty good, I'm pretty sure the guy he shot was a zombie (or w/e they call them) though, and just ditching strangers when they were still in danger like that didn't really stick with me because it wasn't particularly ruthless. Most people would keep running if they were panicked instead of stopping to help someone. I lead with the part I did because I think it's the more relevant point. As I said, I don't recall it super clearly so I'll cop to it if I'm wrong, but I recall the game basically saying "Wow Joel, we sure are close now" without actually having much reason to think that. They just started acting a lot friendlier abruptly. Stux posted:its already showing and not telling theyve just misunderstood the term because of two different contexts for the word "show" because "show dont tell" comes from writing and doesnt mean literally showing visually. a 20 year time skip through a hard cut where it goes from him emotional and devastated to current day joel where we get scant information on what hes done and have to infer what has been going on for his character change is explicitly showing and not telling, its a pretty big example of it. whether its effective or not is a different thing, but its literally what they are doing. actually showing the things he had done for the last 20 years would be telling. I'm really skeptical of your ability to critically analyze things if you can't even finish reading a sentence before getting bored and stopping.

Hoping we get some light shed on what exactly is going on at ND and if these leaks are from a disgruntled employee or if something else is up. Also big lol at that dude tearing the first game to shreds and having people who were arguing about whether or not Joel is a good person or not get pissy at him

JBP posted:He's probably mad/sad irl I mean it does genuinely suck for any writer to have things intended to surprise/shock being leaked without context especially when it's controversial because it means people make up their mind before they see the context and might not be open to what it does. It's not uncommon for games stuff thanks to datamining or such but it does kind of suck. This isn't a comment on the story being good or not because that doesn't really matter. Someone who devoted years of their lives to something having it cut out from under them sucks. On the other hand if the rumors about ND are true he's abusing his employees so welp.

They just started acting a lot friendlier abruptly. Your critique gave me a good laugh so I won’t hold it against you but man you’re insane. Joel basically holds Ellie responsible for Tess’ death and acts like an rear end in a top hat toward her for a big chunk of the game. He only mellows after she basically saves his rear end multiple times: https://youtu.be/gvlUHUrtlAk https://youtu.be/K2FR7zjlba4 Also calling the OST garbage straight out of a Marvel movie is just disingenuous. Acoustic guitar, cellos and percussions is certainly not a groundbreaking choice for the post apocalypse but the music is well executed. https://youtu.be/XYUErkvORWA

Joel was kind of a hard as in the original. He may be very mellow in the sequel, if to drive home the fact that people who go on murder sprees can seem like nice people later if you give them enough time. Ellie was kind of a victim, albeit one who fights back, in the original game. I hope she’s in less sympathetic light here.

I really enjoyed TLOU (I know it was a ripoff of The Road) but part of that was the excellent multiplayer which they've removed from Part 2. The gameplay videos they've released still look good but the lack of multiplayer really is a big downer to me. I haven't read any of the leaks or spoilers (but I'm not that fussed about that kind of thing, anyways) but seeing so much key talent leave Naughty Dog over recent years to leave them as the Neil Druckmann Studio has left me suspecting that things aren't going very well there, especially with the reports of how lovely staff are treated and that sexual harassment thing ND & Sony tried to cover-up unsuccessfully. Amy Hennig being pushed out was the first warning light and it was really obvious that Uncharted 4 suffered for it, glancing over these posts I take it the downward trajectory has continued and they've hosed up TLOU2? I was counting on this to be Naughty Dog's return to form.

You really said the music is bad in TLOU? You think Gustavo Santaolalla is making "generic Avengers music"? Take 5 minutes and watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ejdjcun2Jo4 Skip to about 3:50. He sometimes used things like broken guitars, household items you'd find repurposed as potential instruments in the apocalypse, and seldom heard or mixed instruments to convey the idea of disparate pieces having to come together. The music in this game is instantly recognizable, and I can't pick out a single goddamn Avengers track. There's been video essays about how generic the Marvel movie soundtracks are, but when you hear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssLAf5akbfU, 10 seconds in you know it You are also probably one of the ones who threw their hands up to an invisible referee when you heard the game was an "escort quest" and then want to complain about enemies not being able to see Ellie Firstborn fucked around with this message at 14:40 on May 1, 2020 |

The Last of Us is at its best when it puts you in situations with like 2 bullets, a shotgun shell, a board and you have to fight six human enemies. I think that's pretty solid gameplay and certainly not just uncharted redux. The game doesn't always do this, though, and especially it never really does this on the lower difficulty settings.

Spec Ops was a pretty forgettable game for me. I really think the gameplay held it back immensely since most people point out its story but when I try to remember it, all I can think of is white phosphorus and heart of darkness.
