I do not have hope in general, but I think working towards something as opposed to just sitting to one side, is always helpful. 5, is a friendly looking number. If members of the public do not perform the tests properly I am sure you can not possibly hold the government to account, and if it artificially drives down the reported infection rate that can not at all be considered a benefit to them.

Apparently the idea was floated at the press conference that they may be able to test the entire population of the UK over the course of a month, which while insanely improbable for all sorts of reasons, is actually an interesting idea in theory. Maybe not the entire country, but if you were to blanket-test selected postcodes to get an actual baseline of the infection rate it would mean we weren't still fighting entirely in the dark. You could even get, I dunno, 10k volunteers properly spread around the country and test them weekly? Surely that would give us a much more sensitive early warning of the infection rate going exponential again? I'm working on the assumption that test-and-trace would require us to be dealing with at most high-thousands of infected people to even stand a chance of not being completely swamped, and that's probably going to need months more lockdown, which I just can't see as being feasible.

She confirmed she had initiated legal action against Caroline Flint but I haven't heard anything since. Normally there's at least a statement saying if the parties have reached an amicable settlement or something like that?

I've just kind of realised when boomers do this WW2 cosplay poo poo despite being born in 1949 what they're really saying is "I miss my mum and dad and I'm too emotionally crippled and petrified of my own death to work through it in a healthy way so I'm just going to scream incoherently with what I think my dad would say". There's a whole generation who are just dealing with their parents PTSD.
