Oh good we are back into "hope is a lie" I really missed this.

Even if it is a lie in general it is not a lie for all, or a lie for us. I do not have hope in general, but I think working towards something as opposed to just sitting to one side, is always helpful.

I'm not saying hope in general is a lie, just hope in the parliamentary route to socialism, that the Labour Party is as fit a vehicle for making socialism happen in this country as a car with no engine is a fit vehicle for getting you to work on time.

did you know that the lockdown isn't working and is also killing lots of people? evidenced by:

- falling COVID infection rates
- loads of old people dying in care homes

it would be funny if it weren't so stupid

bonus points for the "lockdown is solely responsible for the economic damage, a raging pandemic would have had absolutely no impact on people's desire/ability to go to school/work/pubs/restaurants" canard

Also the fact that the economy has been overdue a recession for some time now, given that all of the supposed gains since the GFC were just central banks bukkakeing money into FIRE with every measure of actual economic health lagging badly. If it wasn't this, the MBS/Putin beef and price war on oil would have put at least the US into a nasty recession as its entire energy sector poo poo the bed.

If members of the public do not perform the tests properly I am sure you can not possibly hold the government to account, and if it artificially drives down the reported infection rate that can not at all be considered a benefit to them.

I'm going to say anyone who's not that guy who used to hammer nails into himself in the old Jim Rose Circus could do both tests properly.

Apparently the idea was floated at the press conference that they may be able to test the entire population of the UK over the course of a month, which while insanely improbable for all sorts of reasons, is actually an interesting idea in theory. Maybe not the entire country, but if you were to blanket-test selected postcodes to get an actual baseline of the infection rate it would mean we weren't still fighting entirely in the dark.

You could even get, I dunno, 10k volunteers properly spread around the country and test them weekly? Surely that would give us a much more sensitive early warning of the infection rate going exponential again? I'm working on the assumption that test-and-trace would require us to be dealing with at most high-thousands of infected people to even stand a chance of not being completely swamped, and that's probably going to need months more lockdown, which I just can't see as being feasible.

All tests are sent to the same labs. The tricky bit is that they're counting home orders of tests out for delivery as tests carried out, regardless of whether they've even arrived, let alone been used and sent back to a lab, when previously it was daily lab results.

There was, around the first few years of the almighty war on terror there was a lot of effort put into assuring americans (and the wider world) that torturing the poo poo out of people worked and was a-ok especially if jack bauer was doing it to someone very stereotypically middle eastern with a clock counting down somewhere because they are running out of time

Then as soon as it was clear that consequences don't exist in a hypernormalised world those fond of torture stopped bothering to fund and run an unnecessary pr campaign as they could just do it quietly and be ignored

Sure, but if someone doesn't stick it in far enough and they have it but it doesn't show up on the test as a result, I'm sure the government would have no complaints about that.

Chakrabarti was, to the best of my knowledge, someone who had unimpeachable integrity up to that point as a champion of minority rights and civil liberties. There are peerages far less deserved IMO.

On a sidenote, does anyone know the outcome of Marc Wadsworth suing the party in the aftermath of Smeethgate? Not having much luck turning anything up.

Likewise, what happened to Emily Thornberry? She confirmed she had initiated legal action against Caroline Flint but I haven't heard anything since.

Normally there's at least a statement saying if the parties have reached an amicable settlement or something like that?

I'd recommend reading something completely unrelated to what's happening, but full of useful general social ideas, like from the Civil Rights movement or Peterloo. Or learn something new like homebrewing or macrame or gas-cooled fast reactor design.

Or read Camus' The Plague if you want something closer to home. :v:
