if he shorted his own company and made that tweet it is like the most ridiculously clear example of market manipulation possible and the sec would have no choice but to go after him also if he has existing shares pledged as collateral to guarantee his personal loans, the short succeeding would cause him to get margin called and probably wipe out all the gains he otherwise might have gotten

His margin calls are much lower than the current stock price (at least that's the Internet consensus on them, I don't think it's publicly known), he can afford to make number go down

gschmidl posted:Is there anything to all of this? Yes, but in the now-common “this should raise red flags if you know finance and accounting” way, not in the “this will get the feds to do something” way. US GAAP does require you to do business segment reporting (as well as disaggregating revenue by geography, when significant) that Tesla probably isn’t doing right, but the rules for that are a bit subjective. That subjectivity is necessary when you’re setting accounting rules for all types of business, but in practice the authorities aren’t going to do anything unless something is far more flagrantly wrong, andsomething else has already happened to lose someone important a bunch of money, and they’re looking to drop the hammer after the fact. So it’s another small puff of smoke coming out of the accounting and finance department at Tesla, but smoke has been billowing out of there for years and it hasn’t mattered so none of this will matter either.

spacex is the best one of elon's products and it's because it's where he has the least involvement. tom mueller is an actual genius rocket scientist and gwynne shotwell is good at keeping elon out. (also they're like 80% funded by nasa so lol)

it is not elon stanning to agree that spacex's vertical return system is a seriously impressive piece of technology. it's not elon stanning because he had nothing to do with it.
