Oculus refuses to let me start any Oculus apps until I install an update for it and I refuse to install the update because it's going to download 10GB of Home bullshit again that I'm going to have to delete, again. Joke's on them, I'm running everything through Steam VR instead.

I just realized I can use the Quest to watch giant YouTube while washing dishes. The real world is black and white, and the visual delay to my hand movements is a little strange, but it works.

The observant goon may have noticed I referred to Stormland in my previous post about Virtual Desktop. That's because I started to play it three days ago! The first impressions are good, very good. If they maintain, it will be together Lone Echo the best Oculus game. The graphics are good, the performance is decent, and world is well done. It's immersive, it makes you believe that you are in a cool alien world full of weird flora with outrageous colors and impressive vistas with fantastic spires on the distance, which at the end of the day, it's what VR is about. Speaking of cool, the movement is very cool, with a freestyle climbing system and cool Superman-style flying/(gliding?). The combat is nice, it starts fairly mundane but after a while you discover stealth possibilities (there are patches of tall grass, you gain a powered stun shot, you can sneak upon enemies from behind and remove their power source, which is actually a healthkit for you), and the difficulty ramps up so the game ask you to do cool poo poo, and not because it's cool but because it's needed to survive, you can't hold fire while using the shield to win, so you start chaining actions, like picking an enemy in a tower with a sniper rifle, then get close and stealth kill another, you go around a stronghold climbing a cliff to reach the cusp of a tower and later throw a nade inside a room with elite enemies, one survives and pop in from hole to the cliff where I am, firing me, and you start firing at him with one hand while you are hanging from the other from the side of the cliff. The enemy AI is in fact more interesting to fight than HL Alyx combine, it feels more dynamic. I like the transforming weapons, that changes depending if you use them with one hand or two. The upgrades are decent, a straightforward system but still with a good range of possibilities. I like how nonsense is, despite the game having different ores, it's all goes actually to the same 'metal' counter, no need to having recipes that requires X amounts of gold and Y amounts of copper; and it feels good to fire and hear the *clink*clink* when it's collected automatically as you get close. The ideas of getting upgrade points with the extra fruits and the 'collecthaton' by using the scanner to gain the second type of points are good, too. The holographic ui systems like the map and the scanner are nifty. Finally , the story is intriguing, I liked what I saw, I'd like to know what happened to the missing humans, what is the goal of the expedition (colonization?) and the whole thing with the alien flower that started casually but ends up being key to the story reminds me of some serious scifi works (is it some king of alien collective intelligence?), I hope it won't disappoint me.

Organza Quiz posted:I enjoyed dipping into those levels once a session or so just because it's an interesting brain challenge to find places you can intentionally miss cuts or do wrong cuts without continuing to gently caress up and losing the level. Definitely way different to the normal beat saber experience though. The challenges with the disappearing arrows really helped me get better at reading notes as they spawned in, which was great when I was starting out. I did stop when I got to the 'move your hands as little as possible challenges though, I get the lesson the game was trying to teach but I am at peace with never being a super high scoring player who can beat ghost camellia +++++ or whatevs, please just let me dance.

So today I found out the Steam VR order page both A) counts down how many weeks you have to go and B) doesn't go higher than eight weeks. I'm three weeks into my order being placed and it still says 8+ and therefore I am In Despair.Turin Turambar posted:The observant goon may have noticed I referred to Stormland in my previous post about Virtual Desktop. One interesting thing there is to look at what's driving the tracking on those prototypes.

A Quest link cable is literally just a decent USB3 to USB-C cable, you don't need the £80 one Oculus sells. I have an Anker one I bought for £8 attached to a £6 Amazon Basics extension when I need a bit more length and it works perfectly.

Not an Oculus user, but the 10GB probably is the differential update - if you delete the Oculus Home stuff as Jack Trades apparently does.

Looking forward to replaying Tetris Effect when it comes to Steam. Its Epic exclusivity should be up in a little over two months. I don't normally have any issue buying games from Epic, but for VR games it feels wrong.

X-wing VR got a big update: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/gdgzoz/xwing_vr_free_university_student_project_gets/ After the experience of all the neat early Oculus demos for fan made licensed stuff getting yanked, I always download these as soon as possible. e: To be clear for those not following, this is not the even cooler remake of X-wing in VR, this is just a little arcade demo.

Some models in advanced testing are smaller, lighter, and have a faster image refresh rate for more realistic content, according to people familiar with the matter. These headsets also have redesigned controllers, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing unannounced products. It sounds like a revision, more than a Quest 2.

IMO the weight just needs to be distributed better, not removed. I mean I won't say no to a lighter Quest but I've never been like "hey this is heavy". Then again I did the DAS mod with battery counterweight after a week so maybe it did bother me more than I remember?

Chinook posted:Yeah. This thing is arriving this week, and I couldn't be more excited: This is pretty great - I would love it if the battery weight would be on the back, but I'm not sure if adding even more weight to the existing Quest would improve things. Though the video says it's only 19 ounce, which comes down to 0.5kg? That seems ok.

All the Quest really needs is another revision to fix the weight balance issues, enable 90hz refresh (if only for PCVR) and maybe increase battery life a bit.

honestly I'd just rather see them wait until its going to have eye tracking and the electronic variable focus with improved Link and refresh to get a full gen 2 and not just a quest s. I almost feel like they risk releasing too many too quick if its just incremental and not a bigger improvement.

The OG Quest is flawed enough that it could use an incremental step to fix it's biggest issues as a stopgap for the next big thing. If they could also somehow get Link latency down to Rift-S levels then they could also sunset that SKU and consolidate their product line entirely to the Quest.
