the Philippines was literally colonized by Spain and then directly dominated by the US. So they have actual old colonial rulers that match more directly to your comparison.

At least choose a relevant Western comparison like southern European countries being worshipful of Germany. I'd disagree with it still, but it'd be less stupid.

To be clear, what I'm saying is that the Philippine government is unlikely to turn hostile to China as a result of the pandemic, because they've put all their eggs into the basket of cooperating with the PRC. I suppose that's similar to Cambodia right now, except with far less ideological alignment.

There are people who are opposed to Duterte just rolling over for Beijing on everything, including our explicitly socialist left-wing parties, except none of them have any real political power at the moment.

What's likely to happen is that either another pro-China right-winger wins in 2022 to continue this trend started by Duterte, or an anti-China right-winger wins in 2022 by also winning-over enough anti-Duterte liberals to form some shambolic plurality the way Joe Biden has commissioned attack ads on Trump for "letting China off the hook"

If anything the pandemic might be a wildcard in Vietnam. Yeah, China is a bully right next door. But they're at least rational and have a similar system of government that can withstand a crisis. The US can't even help itself, how is it going to help you in a regional conflict or climate catastrophe.

Turns out Vietnam really likes when people don't dick around in their country, and when America quit sending soldiers to murder them, they found the mutual business relations not terrible. I mean, good is debatable, but not terrible.

China is right next door and comes knocking every now and again. Maybe not knocking with napalm and liquidating villages(that anyone acknowledges), but they're still dicking around in Vietnam, and that's far less attractive than working with the U.S., especially when the U.S. would rather lose their capitalism cannon fodder brave men and women in the patriotic armed services :patriot: chasing cheap oil and other monied interests instead of contributing to jungle reforestation with corpse fertilization.

As a Filipino, I wouldn't put the Philippines on the "possible" column. Duterte is leaning hard on establishing amiable relations with the PRC, and while this is fueling a lot of vocal opposition towards him, he controls Congress and the courts.

The most I would expect is that some nativist right-wing demagogue wins in 2022 on a wave of anti-Duterte-mixed-Sinophobia to counter Duterte's tough-on-drugs right-wing demagoguery.

Duterte is breeding a "violence as a first resort" mindset that will see him gunned down by revolutionaries and that will spark a civil war

Holy poo poo, they do not build houses anywhere near this sturdy anymore. I feel proud to know that, decades after we all die from this virus and humans vanish from the Earth, long after the tract homes have crumbled to drywall dust in the wind, my ugly rear end old block house will still be proudly standing and serving as a home for possums and rats.
Our house is 120 years old and still sturdy, even though it’s basically resting atop a hastily assembled brick cellar. Everything is just a little crooked and it’s nearly impossible to get a nail in the walls and a tree fell on it and some of the house almost fell off but it didn’t so it’s fine and part of the house has been strapped back on to the house with cables and bats live in the roof but it’s really sturdy, don’t make them like this anymore.

oh my god 350 peopled died in both 737 max8 crashes combined. Four times that many people died just today, all in the US.

I guess the line between "tragedy" and "statistic" is at what, like 5k? Japan's tsunami feels like it is pretty much just a statistic at 16k. People don't even remember the tsunami anymore, just the zero percent chance that the destroyed nuclear reactor might have impacted them. The 2004 tsunami had like 230k deaths, which is definitely a statistic, also we are going to blow past even that

Chuds are powered by the fantasy that there will come an event so catastrophic that they will be able to pull out their guns, shoot people and be heroes. Cold War didn't get to the shores. Al Qaeda and sympathizers never fully engaged on the American streets except in lone incidents. The virus didn't bring them the society-shattering expectations in the ways of broken windows and looters running amock. Just empty grocery stores and closed parks.

They're not there to rebuild. Just to fill a power vacuum that won't happen.
