the average american eats 218 lbs of meat a year, or 98,883 grams, or 270 grams a day, or 9 ounces a day. the meat ration for GPCR china was 500g a month , or half an ounce per day, and that's if it was even available to begin with. These daily conference calls are starting to not be good for my mental health. This PM will not stop insisting on making travel arrangements and now is organizing a 20+ person quarterly meeting in June which he very much wants to travel for so he can sit in a room with all those people. Like he said specifically to see about reserving a conference room. Def won't be attending that. People are weird. Never knew there were so many death cultists out there.

twoday posted:Good news, everyone gonna try a basic explanation of this because I'm bored. i'm a biochemist, not a virologist or epidemiologist, which will bias my explanation. a key piece of context for this study is here: quote:New global sequences arrive at GISAID at a furious pace; currently, hundreds of new SARS-CoV-2 sequences are added each day (Sup. Fig 1)... a full genome alignment (4,535 sequences as of April 13th), to enable tracking the Spike mutations in a phylogenetic context only relatively recently have we developed the technology to sequence thousands of viral RNA genomes in the span of a month or two. This is the first global pandemic that has occurred since the sequencing revolution. So, there is not much of a precedent for these type of data (probably influenza mutation rates are well known, but not by me). the key bit of insight the authors offer is a quote:...framework for identifying positive selection... based on GISAID data, which provides a rich database of thousands of sequences linked to geographic information and sampling dates. note that the authors are most concerned with mutations in the spike protein. the spike proteins protrude from the viral capsid and interacts with human cell-surface proteins. because the spike proteins are displayed on the surface of the virus, they are typically the antigens that raise an immune response. so, the sequence of the spike protein is related to the mechanism of infection by the virus, and is significant for vaccine development. the authors identify the D614G mutation as significant for improving the fitness of the virus. this is the strain that has become dominant in EU and US over the first-sequenced Wuhan strain. D614G means that the amino acid D (aspartate) at position 614 (proteins are polymers of amino acids) has been changed to a G (glycine) resulting from a single mutation to the viral genome. the 3-dimensional structure of the Wuhan-stain spike protein was determined months ago (which is honestly incredible). three spike proteins (black, light gray, dark gray), each with their own D614 residue (red), come together to form the spike. the bottom is attached to the virus, the top is exposed to the environment: so the bottom line: evidence from this article suggests that G614 is more infectious than D614 covid-19 strain. when G614 becomes present in the population, it takes over, and gives higher viral loads (probably). so, the amino acid at position 614 of the spike protein is relevant in disease progression, but the mechanistic details (is it better at infecting cells? better at evading the immune system?) are not known. will vaccines currently being developed against the Wuhan strain (D614) be effective against the prominent US (G614) strain? no one knows. the people making the vaccine will have a better idea. for instance, Moderna is likely using the full Wuhan spike protein sequence for their vaccine. it is possible that such a vaccine will not be effective against the G614 strain. structurally, it seems to me like D614 is unlikely to be an important feature as far as immune response, but that is total speculation on a topic I am not super familiar with. yes i will pull forward, thank u

French hospital discovers Covid-19 case from December https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/04/french-hospital-discovers-covid-19-case-december-retested He said the patient had survived and that a first investigation to trace the first contamination had been carried out. “He was sick for 15 days and infected his two children, but not his wife, who works in a supermarket,” he said. “He was amazed. He didn’t understand how he had been infected. We put the puzzle together and he had not made any trips. The only contact that he had was with his wife.”
