The Ayako Hamada story is disgusting; mostly because of the attitude of the promotions. She was busted with meth, after being arrested she was immediately stripped of the Sendai Girls World Title and WAVE went and literally deleted every match with her in it off their Network, and then after being convicted she "retired" because no Joshi promotion was apparently willing to book her and that's why she's in Mexico full time now. It goes back to the attitude of the promotions to people that get in legal trouble and its a wider Japanese issue.

That's not the only example - in 2012 Io Shirai and NOSAWA Rongai (who were a couple at the time, which is still really strange to me) were arrested outside Narita airport after cannabis was found in their luggage, NOSAWA got sacked from New Japan, Io suspended from Stardom; both denied any responsibility although apologised for the trouble it caused and it turned out that SUGI had been bribed to plant it in their luggage because someone had a grudge against NOSAWA. Io got her spot back with Stardom but NOSAWA never worked for New Japan again and it probably derailed his career for a while although I don't think he minds now, being the head booker of NOAH at the moment.

There's hypocrisy there where the promoters fire these people while wrestlers who physically harm others but who face no official legal sanctions (Yoshiko is the main example that people will know about, the Tsukushi stabbing thing as well is a good example), while getting punished, still get work and support from prominent people - Tsukushi was suspended from Ice Ribbon for a few months, worked a while in opening matches and is now back at the top of the card forgiven while Yoshiko left Stardom with one of its co-founders who basically started a promotion just for Yoshiko to work in. I'm not someone who supports blackballing either of those two people but that also means that the same applies to Hamada, Io and NOSAWA.

it sucks for everyone. I can't really say there's active malice.

Ayako was a foreign national caught with drugs. She should be be in jail. she lucked out.

Io and NOSAWA were hit at border inspection. Had SUGI not spoken up, they were going to stay in jail.

YOSHIHIKO is pretty fuckin blatant tho. But she's not out breaking people in SEADLinning so I guess they've worked it out?

Same with Tsukushi. No one actually got stabbed AFAIK the cops didn't come and whatever Kagetsu and Tsukushi were up to got worked out of sight.

The Yoshiko thing seems to be a match between two people that really didn't like each other devolving early with Yoshiko winning rather than just her electing to shoot on someone but who really knows. Emi Sakura felt confident enough to book her against Mei Suruga and knowing how protective Emi is with her trainees that to me suggests that people are very sure that was a one time deal. I think it took time for her to earn back that trust though and if she didn't have Nanae backing her up she'd have been gone unless Stardom chose to gave her a path back.

My issue isn't people being or not being punished by the state, that's a different argument entirely, its with promotions being hypocritical in the sort of things they'll toss people to the curb for and what things they'll accept forgiveness for.

TV Zombie posted:

Sugi didn't wrestle for a fairly long time and came back for Zero-1 who, well, aren't necessarily picky about the people they work with.

To be honest this disparity is less a Japanese wrestling promoter thing and more a Japanese thing in general. Both drug laws and the general public perception of all drugs are extremely strict here, even for marijuana, which most people still consider basically on the level of any other drug in terms of badness. It's definitely no surprise to see drug offenses punished more harshly than violence. Which is not to say any of that is good, just that Japanese laws and societal mores reinforce that approach. It sucks.

Yeah the general perception among Japanese fans and presumably companies as well seems to be that Yoshiko's done her time, so to speak. General opinion on the matter over here has always been a lot more varied than it is among English-language joshi fandom, which has been almost unanimously "gently caress Yoshiko" until what seems like relatively recently.

Tsukushi was a minor at the time of the attempted stabbing, which has a lot to do with the lack of solid information about it (Japanese law is very strict about what details can be released about crimes involving minors) and I'm sure the relatively light consequences as well.

Marvelous are planning to do no-fan dojo shows on the second and fourth Sunday's of every month that will be streamed on their streaming service. They have specified that the only people that will be on these shows will be the people that live in the dojo which I think probably makes them the safest possible shows you could run at this time. First show is Sunday; no matches announced as of yet.

Actwres girl'Z have launched a streaming service

https://twitter.com/beginning_pro/status/1261239622257872896?s=19

At ¥1000/month it's one of the priciest on offer. The standard of wrestling is really good, especially for what seems like a promotion based on idols despite losing two of their top wrestlers in Saori Anou and Jumbo Arita recently.

Unlike other attempts at streaming services (*cough*Sendai Global*cough*Gatohverse*cough*), they've started with a pretty decent collection of shows already uploaded so you can jump straight in

The production quality is usually pretty high (can't speak for this streaming service) especially if you like choreographed dance routines and everyone has a pretty well defined gimmick so it's easy to get into. You'd probably enjoy this if you like TJPW or Stardom. The roster are a lot older than those two companies (mostly mid 20s to mid 30s) if you feel put off by all the teens wrestling in those companies too. (On the other hand, I've seen the owner at OZ Academy shows and he's the sleaziest looking man I have seen)

Had a quick look around and it seems to be DVD level quality in terms of production: its not up to the standards of a Samurai TV broadcast or whatever but it also isn't a single cam only show; sort of like Stardom World honestly. Lots of dubbing of themes (including for some of the opening dances which is strange to watch) but that is a fact of life I think and its better that they've gone and found music to dub over than just mute things.

One big thing actually - it doesn't seem to be a pay on the 1st service: you get a full month when you sign up no matter when it is and that's something that other Japanese services really need to do.
