today i've seen...

black billed magpie pair (nesting in a ponderosa next to my house)
black capped chickadee
white breasted nuthatch
chestnut breasted nuthatch
stellar's jay
woodhouse's scrub jay
american crow
house finch
house wren
anna's (?) and ruby-throated hummingbirds
turkey vulture
downy woodpecker
northern flicker

really hoping i see the golden eagle nesting pair today too. also got my oranges out so when the tanagers start flying in my lilac bushes will be sodden with them

nice!

in my backyard i mostly get

a dozen or so cardinals fighting throughout the day
blue jays
carolina chickadees
titmice
white and red breasted nuthatches
carolina wrens
brown thrashers
a couple robins that only come in the evening
downys
red bellied woodpeckers
redheaded woodpeckers
american crows
some finches and/or sparrows i havent identified

my neighborhood has some grackles moving in i think, i hear them walking the dog. there's at least 1 pair of pileated woodpeckers around, crazy to see something that large whip around like a woodpecker instead of soaring like a hawk. bluebirds and mockingbirds on the other side of the neighborhood, not sure why they never come to my yard

we have barred owls and red-tails as predators, i think its a barred owl that's been snatching cardinals out of my yard early in the morning, not sure the hawks are up that early

It's not just the B2B side, B2C numbers are grim too. From costco's weekly meat inventory call:

quote:

Beef Industry
Average efficiency is appx. 60%
IBP's largest Beef plant in US is closed today and Monday
Slaughter is down 220K less than LY
Next week maybe 450K optimistically hopefully
Cut out prices are skyrocketing
Yesterday's cut out was $375 up from $293 on Friday
Previous cutout high was $264 (2015)

Today's cutout price is $445, and costco's numbers were from sunday

so american popular cuisine is just adding different brands of high sugar, high salt pre-processed food products together and then adding more sugar and salt

also calling it "hot tea" seems like a misnomer at first, but then you realize that it's actually heated iced tea, i.e. tea allowed to cool with a lot of sugar added to compensate for it not being hot, then heated up with a bunch of sugar added to compensate for it not being cool

carolina wren song is the best. and agreed on pileated peckers, they're just winged dinosaurs basically

i never appreciated mourning doves until i watched them get banded, they're loving beautiful up close and have all sorts of vaporwave structural color

ALSO, if you have an android device download BirdNet right now. it will help you automatically detect birds by their song, it's loving amazing

This is the one thing that my wife and my Chinese friends to be the most bizzare about American cuisine. In China cinnamon is used occasionally to flavor braised meats, stews and such, like nutmeg or basil. In America it's on literally everything. Every desert, coffee, entrees, other beverages, when you live here I guess it doesn't seem weird that the average America consumes like 3 lbs of powdered cinnamon per year.
