Have been reworking my Grav/Rad controller now that she's gotten to 31 and has Wormhole and is about to have Singularity. I'd originally given her Teleport as a travel power for flavor but in the respec went to the new Experimentation pool for travel and some other toys.

Anybody else have a take? I'm underwhelmed. Speed of Sound is just Super Speed and Jaunt without a hover at the end seems too fiddly to use.

is Experimentation actually in the game yet? I thought we just had Sorcery and Willpower

EDIT: vvv fair enough, I hadn't noticed. the origin-travel power pools have not impressed me a ton, but I'm so accustomed to bimodal travel that it's hard to get used to operating these weird new travel options. sorcery is especially bad about this - magical flight is too drifty to use during combat, but I will frequently want a teleport in combat to resolve a positioning issue and will need to turn flight on first, which is kind of wasteful of time and attention span

EDIT EDIT: is there a new version of mids with elec affinity in it?

LAST ONE I SWEAR: turns out you need the latest version of Mid's/Pine's and also the unofficial patch

Origin travel powers that would be cool: Ninja Run but enhanceable and without the animation. Fly but with Hover's air control. Hover with a teleport and minus the annoying sfx.

What we've got so far: Fly with a teleport, super speed with a teleport.

Jump with a smash was a pretty good idea imo, though I've never used it in practice.

Every time I take Mystic Flight I end up regretting it because it's so unfun to control. Combat Jumping helps, but if I'm taking Sorcery I'm probably already crunched by the 4-pool limit.

IMO the origin pools should be their own separate ancillary pool and not count against the 4 pool limit.

I mean I'd say the problem is that the game was built around having travel pools, so there's good reasons to take hover, fly, and afterburner. if mystic flight covered two or three of those powers while also providing teleports it'd be hands-down better than the originals, but the whole idea is to have it in a pool with powers besides flying ones.

maybe some kind of synergy thing like the Fighting pool? taking more Sorcery powers to increase the air control of mystic flight, at least, that would be sensible

The problem is the stupid flyspeed cap that requires Afterburner to get around. You shouldn't have to take a second power to make the first power not suck.

Worse than that... because of the flight speed cap, putting any +flyspeed into base Flight does nothing. You have to take Afterburner to uncap it.

Yeah, a power that requires you take another power to not suck is really dumb.

LordSaturn

honestly I don't care that much about the max speed increase, what Afterburner does is let me use the full-speed Flight without the weird driftiness due to lack of air control

Jaunt is a real fun time when you're trying to climb the tall thing but for things you can get over in a single port it's alright. Speed of Sound has no stealth component - unfortunately I can't speak to how much of an obstacle that is, because my two characters who went experimentation are a devices blaster and a claw stalker.

Did not take Toxic Dart, had better options.

Experimental Injection is stab-range and it's not going to be up as often as Aid Other, but as a spot status clear it's a nice little thing to be able to do if somebody pops a wakie with no breakie, or you notice they're CCed.

Corrosive Vial does a little more damage than my blaster AoEs all totted up, and has a decent defense debuff component even if it's a little burn patch with no snare. I throw it at breakable objects and groups I pin down with Shockwave. ...also it immediately gets a layer of caltrops on top, though its one advantage is that it's much longer range than caltrops.

Adrenal Booster is a minute worth of half-strength build up with a +special chaser. Its recharge component is kind of baby, it's definitely no Hasten.

It's not going to kick anybody into PLUS ULTRA territory, but it expresses the theme well and it's probably worth exploring. I can definitely see Toxic Dart and Corrosive Vial on a less-damaging Controller primary.

You can build them in several different ways. They are kind of 3 classes put into one. Very frustrating to figure out because there are SO MANY powers and there is no way to slot them all.

Not too great, they're kinda an oval peg in a world of round and square holes. Base form is a melee/ranged hybrid with no mez protection. They can shapeshift into an Anime Tentacle Beast that's basically a flying blaster, but not quite as good as a blaster, although the tentacles will find uses in Pocket D. They can also transform into a lobster, which is pretty tanky but does abysmal damage.

Comfortador posted:

Broadly speaking:
Both of them have outsized powersets, so lots and lots of choices about what powers to take and what ones to skip. Even if you took nothing but kheldian powers from level 1 to level 50, you'd still have to skip 3 powers! they get NO ancillary pools.

They get built-in travel powers as inherents. Warshade gets teleport, Peacebringer gets flight.

They get two transformations each: Nova form is a flying ranged DPS guy with a sizable accuracy bonus, Dwarf form teleports and has some damage resistance. This overrides what I just said about travel powers. Both forms have a set of powers that only work in that form, and you can't use any of your normal powers while they're on; HC changes have added a couple of human-form powers that still work in your alternate forms.

Their class mechanics reward you for being in big teams, and give bonuses based on everyone else's class.

For Peacebringers, most people build for a single form, I think usually human form? So they ignore Dwarf/Nova? Not sure, I've, never played a Peacebringer.

Warshades are have a specific damage buff, Sunless Mire, that they get a copy of in both human and dwarf form, so the metagame consensus for most of a Warshade's life is triform: Stack both Mires and then go to Nova mode and AoE as hard as you can until it wears off. This guide has a bunch more details, like what human form powers you want besides Sunless Mire, and some pretty good binds for rapidly switching forms as needed.

I've actually played a Warshade the Dechs Kaison way and it's kind of a lot of loving work. A lot times your binds will gently caress up if you're in the middle of a cast animation, and I find that kind of distracting. Mire also requires you to stand in the middle of a pack, which you're not necessarily durable enough to do. I think it gets massively easier when you have Eclipse to shore your defenses up?

EDIT: vvv all of that is also accurate

At its absolute most reductive sense: PB is Invuln, WS builds off the concept of abusing large packs of mobs to get scaling buffs that you would find in Dark Armor, and then some.

PB meta is to stick in human form and build out all your toggles with Perma-Hasten and perma-Unstoppable..... not unlike a Sentinel, really.

WS meta is The Dechs Kaison method, embraced because WSes don't get mez protection outside of Lobster. Eclipse to cap resists, Mire once, Mire twice, pop your nuke, and then clean up with squid blasts.

And since going into forms shuts off toggles, WS just ignores toggles except as situationally-useful.

FooF
Mar 26, 2010
My main is a PB. I've only dabbled in Warshades and though I think they have a higher ceiling, they're drastically less reliable and nearly useless against single targets.

For the PB, almost every build goes for Perma-Light Form (which really isn't that hard to achieve via global recharge) so that you have some Mez Protection in any form and basically capped (85%) resists to everything but Psi. However, if you build the form right, you can easily get the Psi hole filled, too. So, a high-end PB is resist-capped against any kind of mob in the game. Endurance drain is about the only hole to speak of, though anything that has a slow debuff also really hurts it.

A lot of builds go Human-only but if they do, they're losing a lot of damage. The Nova form, thanks to an inherent damage buff and general superiority of the Nova blasts, does about 80% more damage than the Human-form analog. Switching to Nova after activating Inner Light (and Light Form carries over) gives PBs quite a bit of AoE Damage and decent escapability because they always fly. Human form is basically SS/Invuln with its own version of Dull Pain, Unstoppable, KO Blow and Foot Stomp paired with a PBAoE Nuke that is up ridiculously often and Pets that double as a second small AoE Nuke. You'll want to slot for Knockdown in some of the powers though so you don't piss off teams.

Damage-wise, top-end Human form is about on par with a Tank: not stellar but not bad. You'll wipe out trash mobs with ease and need a little help with hard targets. Single-target damage is mediocre. Nova form is like 85% of a Blaster but because of Light Form, is 100x more survivable (it just doesn't have a lot of variety in attacks). Dwarf becomes irrelevant once you get Light Form but it does have a Taunt for team play and a very strong self heal (which gives a PB 3 different powers to self heal!)

Honestly, a PB is one of the most self-contained ATs in the game, but you'll live as the jack-of-all-trades in the middle of a bunch of specialists. There is merit at being the 2nd-best at everything, though, and if you want to play as a Scapper, Tank, or Blaster at any given moment, you can.

(Here's an old guide I wrote if you want a more detailed analysis)

Yeah seriously, the villain ones are amazing. Crab Spiders do huge AoEs, Widows stab people for tons of damage, Forts have tons of AoE mezzes and also good damage. Banes aren't quite as amazing but are still decent. All of them have mez protection and general sturdiness, plus team buffs. it is much easier to both build and to play a crabstermind than it is a triform warshade. HEATs do tend to be more... esoteric. VEATs have straightforward and obvious power, and sometimes you get on a five-spider team and you don't even WANT incarnate powers anymore
