Met hear about man being tasered next to flammable liquid, decide to show the Mancs how you really misuse a taser

quote:

Three police officers are being investigated after a man was seriously injured when he was Tasered while climbing over a wall in north London.

The officers approached a man aged in his 20s on Burgoyne Road, Haringey, on Monday.

The police watchdog said it understood the man ran off and that the officers chased him and fired the Taser as he jumped over the wall.

He fell and sustained "life-changing" injuries, it said.

The man was then arrested for drug-related offences and taken to hospital for treatment.

Yeah I have to assume. I guess you could gently caress up your legs or pelvis in some way that healing is going to take a long time and be very agonisingly painful as well.

It's such a wooly phrase as to mean anything. A cut could become a scar which could change your life depending on how you look at it.

e: used to do this sort of dance with the police when I did my A+E job. They'd come to talk to me as the doctor treating someone who'd been in an assault. They'd ask if the injury could leave a scar (which apparently is part of the test to see whether a case can be treated as grievous bodily harm). The standard answer was always "any injury may leave a scar". So saying this may be life-altering is perhaps purposefully vague.

On the contrary, the left very much tried to stop "fascism". Azaña was not after all wrong to regard the fascists as a threat! He ordered the entire party leadership rounded up and detained! But the left militants did so by shooting some fascists, but also liberals, social democrats, social Catholics, conservative Catholics, conservative Freemasons, or just apathetic or unaligned people at the wrong time and place, and declared that they were the real fascist threat. This was well before the Civil War started, under a right-wing government that had won an electoral victory but was far from totalitarian.

This was not very productive at suppressing actual fascism. The coup, in the end, did not come from the fascists Azaña had successfully imprisoned. The Francoists would go on to win by 1939, but that part you quoted is before the war starts

The left being unable to identify fascists despite the undying enmity is a recurring theme - it stems directly from the ideological predisposition to define everyone to the right as fascists, inevitably fascist, or fascist enablers. That was the error of Ernst Thälmann and the entire Third Period too, of course. If anyone to the right means defining socialists to the right of Stalin as social fascists, well, then they're fascists too.

So now it becomes not anti-clericalism, but just anti Right stuff in general that you are cross about? And this is but a few short months before the outbreak of the war, unless I am reading it wrong? What is the difference between the Francoists and the fascists? I would personally say that there is not one, but I would love to hear more.

The thing is, are they wrong though? Your argument seems to be that the left cannot know who fascists are. I would counter that neither does anyone else up to and including fascists themselves. Because we have at least in part made a weirdness out of it based on how close a lot of it's ideas are and were to subsections of the various democratic countries political centres. Ultimately your argument does the exact same thing but to the "left". You define us as being unable to identify fascists whilst also being unable to identify us.

You are so trapped in your reading of history and your blindness to the way in which your own ideology informs your take on what you consider that it renders what could be easy conversations or important ways of making us see differently into excuses for you to talk about things you know. Do you know why people like Goddamntwisto, why people respect their verbiage? Because they try to make it so that others can read and understand. Even if we don't agree there is still a line of reasoning. With yourself you are more wedded to the ideal of "knowing" and the utter callousness of "being right" than you are to the ability to inform.

This could be a friendly conversation, we can both be learning things, instead it ends up everyone getting cross and angry and hurt.

AIUI it's actually from the insurance industry but has been adapted by Plod to categorise seriousness of injuries for investigation (so e.g. a car crash leaving people just annoyed will get a crime number, one where the report includes the words "several yards from the body" will actually get the Black Rats out with their tape measures), and means that the person is unlikely to die but will not be able to continue their life as they had it before the injury without additional support, a long period of rehabilitation, or just plain dumb luck (or some combination of the three).

Obviously the luck part is strong so it goes generally on how the injuries look after admission to hospital - basically serious head and spinal injuries, limb injuries requiring external fixators and/or with a high chance of amputation, major facial injuries, or damage to internal organs.

the "lockdown" was never particularly strict, even compared to Italy/France and not China, which is consistent with the initial plan to have the infection rate peak just below the point at which ITUs are overwhelmed. from the accounts of my friend in NI and my dad (who actually still hasn't had to go back to work) it sounds like they have managed so far

if they were serious about actually extinguishing the outbreak they would be serious about increasing testing capacity, which they evidently are not, and they wouldn't be talking about relaxing the lockdown when hundreds of people are still dying. they definitely wouldn't have briefed the newspapers to tell everyone the lockdown is over

as far as I can see, everything they have done is completely consistent with letting as many people get infected as possible without overwhelming hospitals, and it doesn't seem like they are actually trying to end the epidemic

I've just been past now and one thing people aren't being good at is the bins.

People are standing properly, more or less, more like 6' than 2m but better than nothing. They're going in one at a time and distancing from the counter inside. And then a certain amount of them are apparently coming out and shoving packaging into the overflowing street bin that says "due to covid-19 we are not emptying this street bin" on a big sign on it. :catstare:

Like they've figured out one thing is very much not normal but are running on automatic for the other.

My money is on stupid.

I think the government mirrors their voters, in that they still don't really believe that their actions have consequences, that it will all basically be alright whatever happens, because it's always been alright for them before.

They're malevolent assholes yes, but I think also lazy and stupid.

My best guess is that they've seen the overcapacity they've got in the healthcare system and if they can start using that again up to the limit while also increasing economic output then it's a 'win' for the system overall - increasing GDP while the hospital deaths don't spike in an uncontrollable level (although they increase).

I don't even get the economic argument to be honest, surely even killing everyone the virus can kill in a "controlled" manner is gonna cause far more economic damage than figuring out how to make it work without killing people.

Of course that also makes sense from the stupid tory angle whereby they can't think past next week and also don't want to bother managing a major shift in how the economy works.

Yeah, the fallout from all the deaths is going to gently caress everything up so much harder than this current outbreak. People are going to notice when no one can get funeral spaces. It's going to be hard for them to explain why we're the only nation in Europe that still has thousands dying and at increasing rates.

Whatever their reasoning a master plan this is not.

Stopping the virus from killing people would involve doing things that make capitalism look pointless. Half-assing it protects big business who can soak up furlough losses and probably house prices since we're focussing on rent being paid.

A good response:

Nobody goes out except workers in food chain, utilities and healthcare.
Food provided by free weekly deliveries using existing delivery networks from supermarkets.
All rents/mortgages (personal and business) frozen, including interest, for the duration.

Probably works out not much more expensive than the current furlough payments but way way more effective.

Do that for like 2/3 months and the infection rate will be near enough zero. Problem is you have a load of people questioning why they should go back to wage labouring for their shelter and food as the state has proven itself capable of covering it.

It also ignores one of the economic arguments in favour of the NHS - that it costs businesses and society money if people are off sick or carrying out carer's duties for extended periods of time.
And that the impact on someone's mental health of having a loved one going through a serious illness and potentially dying from it... severely limits someone's ability to do their job, with all the economic impact that brings.

But of course it ignores it, because the neo-feudalist shiteaters that Tory MPs listen to just want to be able to fire anyone who's putting any less than 100% effort into their job. And "I'm bereaved, because I just lost a parent" is no excuse for a serf to be giving their liege.
