I have no idea what HarfBuzz is and as such this previous page is a complete mystery to me. All I know is that HarfBuzz might be the absolute dumbest name for any software component ever, so at this point I don't even care to learn about it.

from context it’s clearly part of the linux font system, that should tell us everything we need to know

it is not very difficult to understand no one being that inspired to invest time and money in this kind of hinting issues (specifically it seems to be down to inconsistent pixel rounding) since they are comprehensively solved by using a hidpi monitor, and anyone who cares much about visual clarity will have already bought one.

telling people who are clearly very invested in the kind of artisanal font render that only linux bothers to provide that if they really cared about accuracy they'd buy a hidpi monitor, is pretty hilarious trolling. but i'm happy to be a dullard and say maybe it's not the sort of thing you should be doing as a professional representative of facebook.

"HarfBuff" sounds like it should be one of those Chinese brands on Amazon selling USB cables that fry your computer but the word is also uniquely repellent. It is a true achievement in open source naming conventions, right up there with GIMP and PornView

Those are scaled with interpolation. Fortunately, I mostly use xwayland for stabbing simulator games, so I can't tell (but I would be pissed off for text-heavy programs). The system console also just works. I had to set the font size to 32pt, but after that I got the most gorgeous rendering of boot-time systemd logs scrolling off my screen that I have ever seen.

I think that's all thats required for X. In i3 I also have to set the font size.
