- You need to make as many Things as you can in the shortest time. That way, you can sell and ship more Things.
- Quality control is a big dumb roadblock that stops you from making and shipping more Things. Short circuit it anytime you can.
- Taking less money now so you can maybe get more money later is dumb, dumb, dumb. Get as much money as you can NOW.
- On the same subject, don't waste money on R&D, wait for some dummy to waste money on it and take their poo poo. Easy.

I'd still rather see it without colorization but it feels much less artificial to me, also he gives a source/final comparison. In one of his other videos there's film clips from several different sources, and you can see that the quality of the "AI upscale" varies greatly depending on the quality of the original source - these Beijing ones look like the source was fairly crappy to begin with.

The one above is especially cool when you find out that it's taken 4 days before the 1906 earthquake destroyed pretty much everything you see.

Looked into it a little bit more, the print was scanned by professionals with legit gear. It helps that he didn't brutalise it by turning everything to max leaving in the flaws that add to the experience. The interpolation doesn't have that cheap greasy soap opera feel. This guy obviously understands art while the other ran a bunch of filters.

Remember when China dropped a Long March on a village by accident when they blew up their launch facilities in the 90's, and the response was to wipe away any evidence the village existed and pretend they didn't kill several hundred people? And how they sifted through the wreckage to try and steal tech off the satellite they blew up on the pad? And were banned from being used as a commercial launch partner for decades afterwards as a result?

It's hard to strive for quality when your entire tech tree relies on stolen documentation which you don't fully understand.

Intelsat. PRC probably didn't get anything from the satellite but managed to glean a fair bit from the independent investigation to improve their rockets as the Chinese investigation was hosed as expected. Because of that the US put in the ban that still stands. A good read.

https://www.airspacemag.com/history-of-flight/disaster-at-xichang-2873673/

quote:

The cause of the accident was eventually traced to the rocket’s flight control system, but not before a military official on the Chinese launch team tried to shift the blame elsewhere. Campbell recalls that he “came in, thanked everybody for great friendship and cooperation, and said that ‘Everybody knows that when you light the rocket it goes straight up, so, obviously, outside influences had an effect.’ We all tried not to laugh.”

Two weeks after the accident, Xinhua, China’s official news agency, reported that the Intelsat-708 accident had left six dead and 57 injured. That, in fact, might be a realistic number for the casualties among the technical personnel involved in preparing the mission. We may never know how many local villagers died, although the numbers could easily have run into the hundreds, which would make the accident the worst disaster in launch history.

Since that day, the reliability of Long March rockets has greatly improved, although China never became a major player in the global commercial launch business. Bruce Campbell did go back to China for two successful launches of Loral-built satellites. He discovered that the village that used to border the launch center has disappeared, as if it never existed. There is no memorial to the victims, and their fate has never been mentioned in the state-controlled Chinese press.

China hosed a launch a month ago destroying the satellite. No villages destroyed.

The China rocket sequence is in the novel, but in the book it's more explicit that China has NASA over a barrel and will not help unless NASA gives them a slot on the next Mars mission. So it's realistic, not pandering.

OnePlus is the new title-holder there with Huawei's downfall in international markets, but even OnePlus is realizing they can (and as of this generation of phones, are) charging higher prices more in line with flagship series from Apple/Google/Samsung.

iirc in the movie China didn't want to help because their rocket was super secret tech they didn't want to get "Stolen" and the other Chinese official counters that how great and generous China would look if they provided the rocket. That scene likely played well in China and made sense to them but it was pretty cringe as it made them assholes angling for an advantage. Fairly faithful to China attitude as seen with the current pandemic.

Asking for a mission slot to Mars is a lot better.

The US government has formally accused China today of orchestrating cyber-attacks against US companies working on COVID-19 research.

The accusations were levied in a joint statement issued by the Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (DHS CISA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The two agencies said they're investigating attacks carried out by "PRC-affiliated cyber actors and non-traditional collectors."

A non-traditional collector is a term used to describe malicious business partners or employees working inside a targeted organization (aka malicious insiders).

"These actors have been observed attempting to identify and illicitly obtain valuable intellectual property (IP) and public health data related to vaccines, treatments, and testing from networks and personnel affiliated with COVID-19-related research," the two agencies said.
