Being in elementary school, the school made a big deal of the launch and taught about science and stuff. There was a big assembly that morning and they had all 500 students together to watch the launch in the combination cafeteria/auditorium. Kari got to sit up front to watch and got to take one other student with her (my brother). They watched the shuttle explode and it was horrifying. Kari didn’t understand it at first and then was just destroyed. I don’t remember if that was on the broadcast or if I saw it on the tv at home later, but there was a shot of her grandparents staring up at the sky in confusion and horror at the launch site.
