Curious why you won't assault the chosen without full plasma. The missions scale with your current tech level.

Hard disagree about Sparks being an adequate substitute for grenadiers. Sparks can't use equipment, you can't bond them, and the Major level Grenadier skills are both excellent. Hail of bullets in particular is great against endgame enemies that combine high armor with high innate defense. Being able to guarantee shred, damage, and holo-targeting is great for alpha striking them down.

I'm glad to see you're getting started on your Psi Ops. I tend to strap them into EXO suits and send them out once they have a few of: null lance, soulfire, dominate, fuse, and solace, with the last being especially important. Fuse is one of the most underrated skills IMO. I also use them as a means to put another plasma rifle in play just after I get them.

I think if position was held for a turn or two, they'd break up a little and have been slightly easier to deal with. All of their patrols just seemed to intersect at that corner in front of the EZ

Yeah, agreed. :(

Well, Sparks are better than grenadiers in one respect: they aren't quite as squishy. RIP, Apples.

The 12 turn timers don't seem that strict. I always evac with time left on the clock, and some of my worst losses have come from trying to bypass pods or triggering multiple activations while rushing. The ones on down UFOs are brutal to the point of being unfair, and I work to make sure I'm practically in the control room before breaking concealment after the first time required a sacrifice runner to hit the button.

Andromedon shells definitely have "spread acid as much as possible" as one of their priorities. I think the fart may have been that the AI (except the Chosen, the fuckers :argh:) plays honest with its sight lines and soldier awareness. It also has absolutely no memory: once a soldier breaks LOS, they could be anywhere. Sometimes, after an initial move, the aliens will see more soldiers and say, "whoops, change of plans!" even if it doesn't make a lot of sense. Except for Chrysallids, who know what they're about no matter how many people they can see.

I admit whenever I play, I use the option to double all mission timers. Most of the timers are alright, but some are just completely unfair, and it is not fun to have a mission where you get 4 turns to haul your whole team completely across a map and then have to fight 3 pods at once because they were all by the objective and you don't have time to take it slow.

I'm halfway through the latest video and, well, I'm sorry for missing all those shots, guys :( I also just realised I've roled scout/sniper all 3 times I've had the chance in these LPs, but I'm feeling more of the cursed scout than death from downtown right about now.

[edit] APPLES NO! You saved us all with those grenades. And Deadford! I blame the game forcing you to wear clothes. And also the aliens being loving ruthless with grenades/AoE weapons. God drat.

Normally I wouldn't dream of commenting on strategy because I'd have crashed and burned the entire campaign within the first month. But since Fairgame explicitly wondered about how we might have done better in this mission, my guesses would be: prioritise blowing cover early in the turn, and exaggerating distance between squadmates if anything with missiles/bombs/grenades is around. But even with that, I figure the standard XCOM bullshit rolls on 75% shots would have still landed us in a similar predicament.

Are there different grades of "burning" status? It always feels like burn damage and duration dragon rounds is far weaker than other sources of flame.
And what else is up for grabs in the experimental heavy weapon/ammo/grenade lottery? Most of the stuff we've got so far has been really good.

Any more victories like that and we'll lose the war. Pyrrhic!

Looking back, what started the chain reaction was too many pods in too close of an area. Perhaps in the future it would be worth it to burn a turn making sure a pod is removed before advancing.

Good Luck, Der Kommander

Over 90(00).

On paper, we really haven’t lost anyone that’s a huge problem. We’ve been losing units that are mostly SGT or lower, and we have a mechanism to replace them every 10 days. Meanwhile, the aliens are running out of new and scary units (meta knowledge, but it’s true) and every day we get closer to making out our own tech, number and quality of resistance orders, and continent bonuses.

Ordinarily this is mitigated by the avatar timer, but thanks to the guardian angel resistance order, we should be able to keep it well under control.

I feel badly about losing people, especially ones like Roth where it was just crushing stupidity on my part. But even units like Deadford aren’t that good; they’ve just done well with their rolls in previous missions. Losing someone with an incredible set of bonus skills or someone very high ranking would be much worse.

Dear Diary,

It's not been easy. It turns out that I am a killer, one way or another. After I broke out from captivity, and found my former comrades looking for me, death followed. Too many good people lost, just to bring me back. It doesn't make any sense. Then they shove a shotgun into my hands, clamp a scabbard to my back and call me Loo-tenant Deadford. Legendary alien blaster. Good for a critical hit in a tight spot. I guess I was happy to be that guy once but I don't quite feel that fire so strongly inside me now.

And they send me out, on a rescue mission. Death followed. I killed. I saw another comrade fall. I almost envy the Warlock and the certainty of his beliefs, that the Elders are in fact benevolent and can save us. I know my hands are not clean and I'm increasingly tired of the whole sordid, bloody mess.

Anyway, must stop writing, my hands are shaking and I need to focus. We dust off for another mission soon. A rescue, of all things.

I've mentioned before how I think the mechanics of Alien Hunters mesh very poorly with the base game, and that goes for the art as well. The "gently caress yeah, steampunk and spikes" look doesn't match the design language of anything else at XCOM. I vastly prefer the cobbled-together look they used for the tactical legacy pack, and I almost wish they had carried that design through the base game.

Yknow what? Legendary difficulty is just some serious bullshit when combined with some of the poorly thought out mechanics of this game. Say what you will about long war, but EVERYTHING in it is balanced (balanced for grognards and thus with a very high barrier to entry, I’ll grant you, but balanced.)

We will nevertheless continue and win this campaign, but you have no idea how much cursing I did at a certain point in tomorrow’s episode. You’ll know it EXACTLY when you see it.

A while back you mentioned not wanting to waste weapon upgrades on like a second rifle/cannon/etc but once you start getting advanced/superior mods the lowest-tier mods are good to fill that niche. Especially for operators sent into potential ambushes and/or a spare upgraded weapon for classes that you only occasionally double up on missions.

Also if you're at all concerned about your stealthed ranger/reaper getting exposed by a blind jump, maybe have another unit move first to make sure it's clear?

Does that not counteract the entire point of having a stealth ranger/reaper?? They're meant to spot, and mostly can always conceal again

I had the same issue as FairGame in vanilla Xcom 2 in that jumping off a building would sometimes find a civilian, who has a tiny discovery radius, but apparently screams loud enough to blow the whole squad's cover. Apart from that, stealth is so good.

The reaper is entirely another issue and should not be considered in any of this discussion, their discover range is so small. SugarAddict is one of our best guys right now.

It's a calculated risk for the first blue-move on turn 1. If you're gonna activate enemies would you rather do by having your phantom ranger accidentally trip over a civilian, or with a specialist?

And yes it's a low probability but reapers dropping from a roof can land right in a civilian's detection range. Seeing it happen one too many times is what inspired the Xzibit scouting technique.

There's also the option of blowing 12AP on Scanning Protocol if your specialist is a genius/savant.
