I got stuck at the final final final optional boss with Stronger Monsters on. After a certain point it just becomes Yggdragon's Blessing/Magic Burst/Mega Magic Burst cheese.

191 hours total, game is done, I did everything I could conceivably do short of farm for the skill seeds for half the party's last unlockable skill, which just seemed a step too far.

Game is a goddamn masterpiece, I'm in love. Never played a Dragon Quest before, don't know what the hell is wrong with me because I was definitely missing out. What a wonderful, wonderful game. I'm so glad I stuck with it when it really wasn't clicking with me at first.

Yeah, reading your reaction to the end of Act 1 through Act 2 Sylvando made me very happy. I really love that whole section and payoff, and especially sweet, simple Hendrik, which is being set up throughout Act 1 in a way that makes you think the game is just unimaginative.

191 hours? WTF.

Looking at what I have left to do, and assuming I fill out the monster charts and do the remaining 30 or so skill seeds and even get every single item...I'm looking at 110. 115 tops.

How did you get to 191? That's crazy.

 I think my file is at 120-ish, and I haven't done everything. I beat the post-game superboss, but my party's not maxed out and I didn't do all the quests (and I have the PS4 version, so no Tickington at all). Different people play games at different speeds.

Yeah, and I have only controlled combat like 1% of the time since early in act 1 probably makes a difference. I could see doing it manually all the way through adding a ton of time.

If you're looking for another DQ game, the one that's most like 11 is 8. I recommend the 3DS version if you have one, because the added QoL really improves the game at the cost of a slight hit to graphics and sound quality.

I just immersed myself in the world. I talked to everybody, wandered the towns and countryside, drank it all in etc. I loved how much everybody reacts to the events of the game world, and how the further they were from the action the less detail they had and the more they filled in the blanks themselves.

I adored that Act 2 resolves with the world saved and all the misery caused by the end of Act 1 being mitigated somewhat by your actions, but there is still some sadness in what was lost to achieve victory etc and then in Act 3 you get to jump back to the end of Act 1 and make sure everything ends up at that same resolution but this time everybody gets there in a far "purer" and happier way: the monster exiled from her village and the little girl orphaned who you get to L'Academie end up there in far happier circumstances; Sylvando's dancers end up finding their calling after all; Sylvando and Erik both reunite with their families without heartbreak, the Last Bastion becomes a restored Cobblestone, the Arborian couple whose newborn died in the disaster have their child back, and of course most importantly Veronica lives etc.

In the end I basically had to force myself to finish up the final battle (and I was so overpowered I just obliterated the final boss) because I just really didn't want the game to end.

Edit: I had to look up the significance of the ending cutscene, which was still wonderful without context but with it wow what a loving love letter to the series :allears:

I'm done, too. 98 hours. Calasmos was a pushover once I realized supreme sword was the wrong one. D'oh.

And End of Time was even harder. I liked the callback to the first game, too.

Glad to be done, though. Maybe I will finally finish Yakuza games now.

I beat that boss entirely without using the Super Sword of Light because how the hell are you supposed to figure that one out, especially when you can make better weapons by and far? Oh well. It made the final fight stressful as all getout but not completely unbeatable so that was nice.

Because of the watcher with the pink bubble that you run by constantly. But yeah, it is counterintuitive that the upgraded sword that appears to have all the same abilities plus more is the wrong one.

Eh, the real unintuitive thing is that you have to use it. I had it equipped alongside the other sword and figured if anything special was going to happen it would from that.

the problem with the DS version of 4 is that it doesn't have party chat outside of Japan, while they re-implemented it in the English mobile releases

apart from that it's a really good version of the game. it's the one that really got me into the series. but yeah, party chat rules, so going the mobile version of the game for that makes sense if you like playing RPGs on there :shobon:

I played 1-3 on mobile. It's cool because of all the grinding I can do while pooping.

I hear 4 isn't very grindy, though. But whatever.

A portly feline wizard waddles forth, muttering something about conjured food.

You will absolutely need to grind to get all the goodies from the postgame superboss. This includes spending a lot of time in the casino for some useful gear.

At some point, definitely play the SFC fan-translated version of 3, as the mobile port removed the Pachisi/T 'N T minigame and all monster animations. Even the GBC version includes these plus has an additional postgame dungeon with a mountainous grind required to access. GBC DQ3 is also very impressive tech-wise and was officially localized by a goon formerly employed by Enix USA!

DQ10 is a Japan-only MMO so that one might not be possible.

You don't need to grind in 3 that much either though. Get some poison moth powders and go metal slime hunting at the tower by Dharma if you need some levels to class change but you're usually fine just with xp from exploring as a first time player, especially if you run a powerhouse team like (lucky devil/sexy) Fighter/Priest/Goof-off class changed to Soldier/Sage/Sage. Going Fighter->Soldier is debatable in the remakes too because Fighters aren't as badly neglected as they are in the NES version. A level 20 Fighter can sometimes have more agility than a level 40+ soldier so even after class changing you have a soldier who's faster than a pure solider could hope to be.

Don't worry too much about not being able to play 10. It's fun to a point but at its core it's still an MMO so there's a lot of grind with a fairly wonky combat system.

Hi thread,

I had absolutely no experience with Dragon Quest until last week, when I bought 1 on my phone and played through it because of quarantine boredom. I enjoyed it so much I immediately bought 2 and played through that as well.

I'm excited that I still have eight more games to go through. The series just scratches a really nice JRPG itch I missed. I'm not sure when I should bounce off of the mobile ports, though.

The Dragon Quest Monster games are good Pokemon-style games, though instead of catching and evolving monsters you breed them together to make new, stronger (usually) monsters. They're on handhelds and I don't know if they got any mobile ports, probably not. There's another in development for the Switch but there's not been much word about it lately.

When you want even more Dragon Quest, there are randomizers for the NES versions of DQ 1-4. :getin:

I haven't played it yet but if I understand, 8 on PS2 is like WW on GC. It still looks great today. But 8 on 3ds doesn't look as good or sound as good. Even if it has QoL upgrades. Most old games look like poo poo now, but DQ8 and WW both use the cel shading which holds up.

The 3DS versions of VII and VIII both have improvements, but VII's are the most transformative. It's still very long and weirdly paced but it's one of my favorites.
