I was secretly relieved by how bad it bombed, because my kid was born right before the final season started and we did not have time to sit and watch an hour of uninterrupted prestige television. So as spoilers started to permeate my consciousness all I could think was "well, I guess I'm not missing out".

Of the four listed I'd say Ally McBeal was comparable. I still can't listen to the opening to hooked on a feeling without a deep, visceral hate.

Yeah, Alias was popular but it didn't permeate culture the way Game of Thrones did. GoT was literally everywhere, to the point where you felt weird if you weren't watching it because everyone was talking about it or making jokes and memes about it or doing tie-in products that were on store shelves, and as soon as the last episode premiered everyone just sort of awkwardly kicked it under the bed and forgot about it.

I believe you, but I never knew anyone who gave much of a crap about the show during its run. Maybe it was bigger if you were still in school? I'm older so that does tend to refract the lens of what pop culture "is" quite a bit.

I'm on the cusp of 28, so the show didn't start until I was in college. It wasn't necessarily that people were lusting over it, but it felt like everyone watched it. Memes, references, and merchandise (even tie-in beer and wine) were inescapable. When an awaited new episode was airing, Facebook statuses and Instagram stories would be all about it.

When the show ended, it's like a switch was flipped.

Best advice I was ever given?

"Ticker, you'll be a lot happier once you stop caring about the opinions of a culture that is beneath you."

I learned my worth, learned the places and people that matter.

Opened my eyes.
Lost is more of an apt comparison, both in being a worldwide phenomenon and having a steady decline in quality until a lackluster ending followed by being completely forgotten.

The show didn’t start until I was working my first real job after college and it was still completely inescapable. Every job I’ve had, at least half the people there were bonkers for it. I was the only person in the safety trailer at my last job that wasn’t a giant fan... til it ended and none of them spoke of it again.

I'd rather mention a strip club in Dildo and then deride it heavily for not being as good as the strip club in South Dildo.

i was a regular attendee of a bar which did live watch parties of every single episode. this event was so popular that the bar technically was closed for a private event so that the owner could enforce turning people away at the door, because otherwise it would be completely jammed full of people. if you didn't know someone who could get you a seat, then you weren't getting in. celebs would attend this thing when they were in town - the lady who played the hot translator came with one of the writers of the show, and that dude bought a round of shots for the house. the guy who played the red head barbarian also came by one night. it was a serious event and it was always fun showing up, taking your seat, and watching the folks who'd try to slide in to the bar only to get turned away. a couple folks got real whiny about it but too bad. the owner even had a regular merch giveaway, it was a big drat deal

anyway the atmosphere in that place was a bit funeral-like for the last season as more folks swung over to the small but growing faction of "drat this show started sucking pretty bad". plenty of folks held out hope to the end but no, the last episode was like a death march of broken hopes
